This 200-year-old town is the last on the West Coast with property below R650 000

Translate

In 1826, when British Navy Admiral Robert Lambert ventured up the Cape Coast, he may not have known he would be discovering what would later be known as the Diamond of the West Coast.

Today Lambert’s Bay is beloved for its crayfish, white sandy beaches, dolphins, whales, birds, and wildflowers.

But it is also one of the last towns along the West Coast with affordable property.

Affordable Property in Lambert’s Bay

Among the 41 sales recorded by the Western Cape Deeds Office, the average sale price for a property in Lambert’s Bay as of September 2026 was R970 000.

This makes Lambert’s Bay cheaper than Elands Bay, Velddrif and Strandfontein, where the average sale price ranges from R1.42 million to R1.73 million.

Currently, a handful of listings advertise 2-bedroom flats in Eureka Sentrum (Apartments) for R630 000.

Studio flats in the same building are listed for R420 000.

These flats are a 1-minute walk from Meeuland Beach.

Buyers are getting a bargain.

The typical price per square metre for a 2-bedroom in the Western Cape is R29 591, but these flats start at R10 161 per square metre.

Other properties in the area include a 988-square-metre corner plot listed for R450 000.

Buyers can get a 3-bedroom double-storey home listed for R1.8 million.

These listings mean Lambert’s Bay has the cheapest seaside residences on the West Coast.

Living in Lambert’s Bay

Lambert’s Bay is a 3-hour drive (258 kilometres) from Cape Town via the N7 and R364.

The short distance makes it an easy weekend getaway.

But it could also become a permanent residence.

The town has a primary and high school.

It has a population of 8 911, according to the 2022 census.

Yet life in Lambert’s Bay is quiet.

The town has a small shopping district with a handful of national retailers, including a Spar and OK Foods.

On the last Saturday of every month, the community meets at a farmer’s market opposite Muisbosskerm.

The coastal town is safe.

Crime in the area is declining.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), crime dropped 15.5% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.
