74 nabbed as Ilocos cops keep crime crackdown amid rains

SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur, Philippines—Ilocos Region police arrested 74 people in anti-illegal drug and manhunt operations from Aug. 8 to 14, even as police units responded to flooding and other impacts of the southwest monsoon, or habagat.

According to the Ilocos Police Regional Office 1 (PRO 1), 25 anti-drug operations resulted in the arrest of 30 suspects and the seizure of 111.15 grams of suspected crystal meth, or “shabu,” and 0.5 grams of dried marijuana leaves, with a combined estimated value of P755,880 based on the standard drug price.

Police also arrested 44 wanted persons, including nine most wanted persons—five at the regional level, one at the provincial level, and three at the municipal level.

PRO 1 said the operations were carried out while other police personnel were engaged in search-and-rescue operations, evacuations, and the management of evacuation centers amid the habagat.

The regional police office said it maintained the balance between disaster response and peace and order operations.

Brig. Gen. Jovencio Badua Jr., PRO 1 regional director, said police would continue assisting communities affected by the monsoon while addressing threats to public safety. /atm
