Minister backs Red and White Chip for digital sovereignty

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto said he supported national semiconductor innovation through the development of the Red and White Chip as an effort to realize Indonesia's digital sovereignty.

"If we want to prosper, if we want to stand on par with other countries, as the President said, we have to master technology whether we like it or not," Yuliarto said in a statement here on Thursday.

He emphasized once again that this is not an option, but something that must be pushed.

Yuliarto stressed that mastering three technology fields, namely artificial intelligence (AI), post-quantum technology, and semiconductors, needs to be accompanied by stronger scientific foundations and human resource readiness so Indonesia is not only a user but also able to develop technology independently.

He reminded universities that using AI in learning should not reduce students' opportunity to develop thinking skills and understand fundamental concepts.

"Everyone talks about AI now. So, I often tell campuses, please do not have lecturers use AI to make exam questions, because then students will answer using AI, and then AI will also do the grading," he said.

Besides AI, Yuliarto highlighted the importance of strengthening quantum technology competence to face new digital security challenges.

He also underlined the need to build national capability in semiconductors to develop chips for strategic services, such as digital passports and high-capability infrastructure.

Yuliarto also expressed appreciation to state-owned printing company Peruri for its efforts to develop the Red and White Chip. The development is expected to be a concrete step to strengthen Indonesia's technological sovereignty while reducing dependence on chips from abroad.

He expressed hope that Peruri could take a role as a driver of product development while bringing universities together with industry, so research results can be developed into technology products that benefit the public and national development.
