Taylor Fritz Advances After Injury Forces Arthur Fils To Quit

Translate

Taylor Fritz advanced to the semi-finals of the Basel Open on Friday after Arthur Fils was forced to retire injured from their quarter-final clash. The American was leading 6-2, 2-0 when the French world No. 8 ended the match due to a suspected back problem. At the conclusion of the opening set, Fils called for the trainer after experiencing discomfort in his lower back and briefly left the court for treatment before deciding he could not continue. The injury setback comes at a crucial stage of the season for the 22-year-old, who currently sits seventh in the ATP Finals race and is due to compete at the Paris Masters next week.

Fritz, meanwhile, remains an outside contender for a place at the season-ending ATP Finals, sitting 12th in the standings.

The American will next face Valentin Vacherot of Monaco for a place in Sunday's final.

Vacherot booked his semi-final spot by ending Holger Rune's campaign with a three-set quarter-final victory over the Dane, who is continuing his comeback from a lengthy injury lay-off.

In the other semi-final, Jiri Lehecka will face either Jan-Lennard Struff, who knocked out Novak Djokovic, or Nuno Borges.

Lehecka, ranked world No. 21, secured his place in the last four with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 win over local wildcard Jerome Kym, bringing the Swiss youngster's impressive run to an end.
