How much does it cost to: Drive from Durban to Mozambique?

Translate

One of the easiest ways to get an international roadtrip from Durban is the scenic drive to Mozambique. Take a look at the cost of driving from Maputo to Durban.

THE COST OF DRIVING FROM DURBAN TO MOZAMBIQUE

It could cost between R3500 to R4500 for a return roadtrip to Maputo, the capital and largest city in Mozambique. Fuel is the biggest cost to consider.

Petrol 95 now costs R29.38 a litre at the coast after a R3.33 increase on 7 October. The distance from Durban to Maputo is around 650 to 700km, as a single journey, depending on your route.

For a fuel efficient sedan or crossover, you would be looking at spending roughly R2800. An SUV or bakkie would cost around R3600. It would be advisable to fill fuel in South Africa before crossing the border. Mozambique sets its fuel prices through its own formula and subsidy structure, separate from South Africa’s.

COST OF TOLLS AND CROSSING THE BORDER

There are tolls on the N2 North of Durban. If you are crossing Lebombo, there are two toll plazas between the border and Maputo. You’d need to budget a few hundred rands for tolls in total. At the border, you’ll also pay for Mozambican third-party vehicle insurance and vehicle related fees.

You will need your registration papers and a letter of permission from the bank if the car is financed.

PONTA DO OURO IS A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE

If you want to cut down driving time and still enjoy the beaches, Kosi Bay is a shorter distance to Maputo. So, fuel costs would drop significantly. However, the road from the border is deep sand. So, you will need a 4 x 4 or a paid transfer.

TIPS TO CUT COSTS

  • Share the trip. Split the fuel and additonal costs per person and travel with a group.
  • Fuel rises at high speeds, so drive steady.
  • Carry cashin rands so there is a little change of currency and extra costs.

So, a return roadtrip should cost between R3500 to R4500 per vehicle.
