The reborn Audi A2 is its most efficient EV yet - with up to 401 miles of range

Audi has revealed its new A2 e-tron small electric car – and it comes with impressively long range.

The compact hatchback will be the entry point to the German marque's EV lineup with a £32,200 starting price.

Small EV rivals such as the Kia EV3 and VW ID.Neo offer maximum ranges of 370-390 miles, so the Audi A2's substantial range of 401 miles puts it ahead of the competition and on par with much larger long-range EVs.

This is thanks to it being Audi's most efficient model ever made, consuming as little as 12.8kWh per 100km (62 miles).

The new A2 marks the return of the 2000s icon after over 20 years on ice, reinventing the short-lived but much-loved model for the modern electric era.

UK order books open next month, and first deliveries are expected in early 2027.

The influence of the original 2000s A2 is obvious in the new version.

The sloping roofline and short, rounded nose are the most prominent similarities, along with the bubbly, slightly toy-like shape.

However, the new EV is a lot more svelte, with more of a lozenge shape and a far lower roof than the boxier original A2.

Modern touches include new taillights inspired by Audi's Nuvolari concept, aerodynamically optimised wheels, sleek light bars, and an overall smoother shape, all of which keep it in line with other e-tron models while reducing drag.

The A2's interior is dominated by the 11.9-inch instrument display and 12.8-inch curved touchscreen – Audi's panoramic MMI display. As expected, it comes with Audi voice assist and AI, as well as (intrusive in our opinion) Microsoft Teams online integration.

There's a 14-speaker Sonos audio system and aero-acoustics to keep the cabin quiet, as well as front and rear microfibre and cloth seats designed with roominess in mind and a 396-litre boot.

Boot space is less than the Kia EV3's 460 litres, but more than the VW ID.Neo's 385 litres of space.

The A2 is also the first Audi to use 'Fidlock', a German fastening system that uses magnets and mechanical locks to allow you to move and place cupholders wherever suits you.

Expect adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, Parking System Plus, Side Assist with Exit Warning, and Rear Cross-Traffic Assist to come as standard, though you'll pay extra for more advanced assists and surround cameras.

Performance, batteries, range – the small EV that can go far

Audi will offer its rear-wheel drive A2 e-tron with three battery options: 52kWh, 61kWh, and 84kWh.

Four power outputs will deliver between 168bhp and 322bhp. The entry-level 168bhp version with its 52kWh battery will offer 262 miles of range.

The 187bhp version with its 61kWh battery can do a very healthy 320 miles of range – London to Falmouth on a single charge. 

The 228bhp and 322bhp versions that use the 84kWh battery can do 401 miles – London to Edinburgh without stopping – and 391 miles respectively.

To achieve these figures, Audi has focused on reducing drag, giving the A2 e-tron a drag coefficient of 0.24 – the lowest of any model in its compact range.

If you want optimum performance, you'll need the 322bhp version, which has a top speed of 124mph and can do 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds.

DC charging is available at up to 183kW, and you can expect the 84kWh battery to take around 29 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent. The smaller batteries can charge at 100kW or 105kW speeds.

The original A2 (left) went on sale in 2000 but was discontinued by 2005 - and for one very good reason

The A2's efficiency figure sits at 5.1 miles/kWh – better than the Kia EV3's figures of between 3.9 and 4.1 miles/kWh.

It's also worth noting that the A2 features bi-directional charging, which can power external electronics hooked up to the car, while its Vehicle-to-Home function can use the vehicle's battery to power your home.
