Indonesia extends condolences over death of Norway's King Harald V

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has officially extended its condolences to the government and the people of Norway over the passing of King Harald V on August 28.

The condolences were conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono by signing the condolence book at the Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (September 1).

"On behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as on my behalf, I extend my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Kingdom of Norway and its people on the passing of His Majesty King Harald V," Sugiono stated in his condolence remarks, as published on his official social media, Wednesday.

The foreign minister said that King Harald V "will always be remembered and honored for his leadership, warmth, dedication, and humility."

"His legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come," he added.

The condolences conveyed by Sugiono reflected the respect of the Indonesian government and people for the passing of the late king, as well as the strong friendship between Indonesia and Norway.

FM Sugiono's visit to the Norwegian Embassy to sign the condolence book was welcomed by Deputy Ambassador for Norway to Indonesia Christian Groseth.

King Harald V passed away on August 28 after undergoing medical treatment at the National Hospital in Oslo since August 17, as announced by the Royal Palace. He was 89.

The palace later disclosed that he had been receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder that had caused fluid to accumulate in his body.

His health deteriorated after he developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream, Norwegian public broadcaster NRK reported.

Crown Prince Haakon immediately succeeded his father as Norway's monarch under the country's constitutional rules, taking Haakon VIII as his royal name.

On September 1, King Haakon VIII took his oath of allegiance to the constitution of Norway in a ceremony at the Norwegian Parliament.
