Truck crushes motorcyclist to death in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified motorcyclist was crushed to death by a tipper truck at Ilasa Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, Lagos State.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the accident, which occurred around 3:18 pm, involved a tipper truck loaded with sand and marked 19F 992FG and a motorcycle.

He noted that the agency’s Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa was immediately deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call, with an estimated arrival time of 15 minutes.

The PS added that a preliminary investigation showed that the accident occurred after the tipper driver allegedly lost control and rammed into the motorcycle from behind.

He stated, “Tragically, an adult male passenger on the motorcycle lost his life as a result of the collision.”

According to the statement, LASEMA responders, working with the agency’s LRU paramedics, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and policemen, managed the scene.

Oke-Osanyintolu added, “The remains of the deceased were recovered, bagged with dignity by the Agency’s responders, and handed over to family members present at the scene in accordance with best practices.”

He noted that the affected tipper and motorcycle were removed from the carriageway and taken to Ilasamaja Police Station for further investigation.

The PS said the operation was concluded and normal traffic flow was restored in the area.

Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to the safety of lives and property and will continue to ensure rapid emergency response across the state,” he concluded.

Truck accidents in Lagos have become a recurring occurrence.

PUNCH Metro reported on June 2 that a commercial motorcyclist was crushed to death by a truck loaded with flour along the Sabo, Onimalu–Itamaga road in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority had confirmed that the rider was reportedly speeding when he suffered a brake failure and rammed into the rear of the moving articulated truck, leading to his instant death.
