The Expanse Wisely Dropped An Awkward Book Detail From Holden & Naomi's Romance

While The Expanse is widely considered a perfect book adaptation, the series did make some major alterations when bringing James S. A. Corey's novels to television. Not every change involved rewriting a character or removing an entire storyline, though. Like other book-to-TV adaptations before it, the creators of the Syfy and Prime Video science fiction series had to decide which details could realistically be translated to live action. That was especially true with the Belters, whose bodies are described very differently from those of people born and raised on Earth.
The difference in physical appearance between Belters and Earthers is especially noticeable because of Holden and Naomi, as the latter is taller than the former. The show couldn't reproduce that exact height difference, largely because Dominique Tipper, who plays Naomi, is about 5'7", while Steven Strait's Holden is considerably taller. In other words, The Expanse's central couple has an almost opposite visual dynamic to the one that readers encounter in the books.
Despite the books' Holden and Naomi looking different from one another — while the television versions are much closer in stature — the beloved sci-fi series still managed to make their relationship one of its emotional anchors. Considering how difficult it would have been to faithfully reproduce the novels' Belter physiology across an entire cast, The Expanse wisely chose one of the most practical adaptation compromises.
Holden & Naomi Are Physically Very Different In The Expanse's Books
Unlike their TV counterparts, Holden and Naomi’s physical traits in Corey’s hard sci-fi novel are described in a way that shows they grew up under different gravitational conditions. In the novels, Naomi is nearly two meters tall, around 6'5"– 6'7", and extremely thin, with the elongated physique associated with Belters. Early in Leviathan Wakes, Holden observes that she towers over him. Holden, meanwhile, is an Earther, born and raised in Montana. He has the more compact, sturdier physical proportions associated with someone who spent his childhood in Earth's gravity.

Rocinante crew — or just another inner?
The Expanse novels don’t reveal Holden's exact height, but given that he was raised on Earth, he is probably of average height but looks short compared to Martians and Belters. Though there’s nothing wrong with Naomi being taller than Holden, their physical differences wouldn’t have translated well on screen. Audiences might have been distracted by the way the Belter literally looked down at her romantic partner rather than focusing on what makes their relationship special. Of course, it can't be denied that seeing Holden stand on his tiptoes to kiss Naomi would have been a tiny bit hilarious.
The Expanse Couldn't Depict Belter Characters As They Are In The Books
One of the most difficult elements to get right in the TV adaptation of The Expanse was the physical appearance of the Belters. Fortunately, the series creators made the right decision: they made the Belters look normal, especially since they have a dramatically different physique from people born on Earth. Reproducing that difference literally would have created a huge casting and CGI problem. The television series needed hundreds of Belter characters, ranging from major protagonists to background extras.
Making all of them accurately match the extreme proportions described in The Expanse books would have required either finding a vast number of naturally tall, extremely slender actors or relying heavily on visual effects. Doing this for a television production that already had to create spaceships, space stations, zero-gravity sequences, alien technology, and enormous sets wouldn’t have been easy. Even if CGI could have altered actors' proportions, executing it consistently across The Expanse's six seasons would have been expensive and time-consuming.
Belter physique is supposed to be the result of long-term adaptation to low gravity, but making characters look radically non-human could have undermined the grounded aesthetic that makes The Expanse distinctive. Basically, the series works because audiences aren't spending time wondering why some characters look like they were digitally stretched. The characters and their journeys are the focus, not their appearance.
