Sreeshankar, Solomon reach long jump final as Tejaswin slips to third in decathlon

Nagoya: Murali Sreeshankar and David Patturaj Solomon advanced to the men's long jump final at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday, giving India a double representation in the medal event.Sreeshankar finished second in Group B with a best effort of 7.84m.

Solomon, meanwhile, secured third place in Group A after recording a best jump of 7.62m.

Tejaswin slips to third

Tejaswin Shankar dropped from first to third in the decathlon standings after the discus throw event on Sunday.He had entered the discus as the leader after finishing third in his 110m hurdles heat in 14.33 seconds, a performance that earned him 932 points. He was leading the overall standings with 5,270 points and appeared to be in contention for gold.

However, Tejaswin finished third in the discus with a best throw of 36.77m, four metres short of his best. His overall tally moved to 5,869 points, leaving him third, with athletes from China and Japan occupying the top two positions.

The final two events of the decathlon, the pole vault and javelin throw, are not exactly Tejaswin's strengths.

Multiple exits in Kurash

India endured a difficult day in Kurash, with several athletes making early exits.Vishal was knocked out in the men's +90kg quarterfinals after a 0-5 loss to Thailand's Kunathip Yea-On.Sangita Balhara went down 10-0 to Charmea Quelino of the Philippines in her round-of-32 bout. Bharti then lost 3-0 to Iran's Tahereh Azarpeivand in the round of 16, while Yash Kumar suffered a 10-0 defeat to Tajikistan's Shakarmamad Mirmamadov.

Manju sixth, Priyanka disqualified

India's Manju Rani finished sixth in the women's marathon race walk, clocking 3:40:17.Priyanka Goswami, meanwhile, was disqualified after the 9km mark.
