The Lord of the Rings is about to enter a brand-new era as the franchise is poised to receive several highly anticipated new projects across various mediums in the coming months. For starters, the next season of Rings of Power promises to take fans to unexplored corners of Middle-earth from the Second Age, while The Hunt for Gollum is finally set to arrive in late 2027.

Additionally, while we still don't have a timeline for its release, Stephen Colbert's Shadow of the Past will revisit some of the more mysterious and exciting chapters of Tolkien's work. Beyond film and television, Warhorse Games' open-world Middle-earth RPG is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in gaming, though we're certainly in for a bit of a wait for that as well.

However, if you're looking for a brand-new Lord of the Rings experience that takes you back to some of the iconic locations across Middle-earth, the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit has plenty to offer and is set to arrive as early as next year (via BGG).

The Lord of the Rings: The King's Gambit is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious new Middle-earth tabletop releases in years. Developed by Restoration Games alongside Space Cowboys, the game is a modern reimagining of the cult-classic 2000 board game Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit, with original designer Rob Daviau leading the new project. Rather than simply reskinning the original, The King's Gambit updates its sprawling, multi-front battle system around the climactic events of The Return of the King.

Players will simultaneously contend with four major conflicts from Tolkien's story: the Riders of Rohan battling Sauron's forces on the Pelennor Fields; Gondor defending Minas Tirith, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli fighting through the Haradrim at Pelargir; and Frodo and Sam making their final journey through Mordor toward Mount Doom.

Players use cards to determine their actions across these interconnected battlefields, deciding where to concentrate their resources and strategizing based on pulls. It's a 1–4 player game and categorizes its systems around card-driven battles, dice rolling, area influence, and team-based play.

There will be a limited deluxe edition crowdfunded by Restoration Games, which features upgraded components and enormous three-dimensional models of Minas Tirith and Mordor that bookend the playing area, alongside detailed character and army miniatures. The standard retail version will retain the underlying gameplay and artwork but will not include all of that elaborate 3D terrain.

As for a release date, the game is currently listed for 2027, with Space Cowboys handling its worldwide retail launch through Asmodee. Before then, Restoration Games plans to launch the deluxe crowdfunding campaign this month. Rob Daviau recently indicated that the Kickstarter is scheduled to begin on September 22, 2026, although an exact 2027 retail date has not yet been announced.
