Mohammad Ashraful speaks in a team huddle, Darwin, August 3, 2026

Mohammad Ashraful was appointed Bangladesh's batting coach in November 2025  •  BCB

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reassigned Mohammad Ashraful from his role as the men's team's batting coach, with BCB's High Performance coach Mohammad Salahuddin set to take over the role on an interim basis.

Ashraful was appointed Bangladesh's batting coach in November 2025. The BCB said in a media release that he would be moved to a new role within the board and that Salahuddin will serve in the role until a permanent replacement is appointed. Incidentally, it was Salahuddin who had earlier served as assistant coach and was in charge of the batting unit before Ashraful had replaced him. The board did not provide further details about Ashraful's new role.

Ashraful was part of one of Bangladesh's greatest moments in history. He was only 20 years old when he led the team to a stunning upset of Australia in 2005. That century was part of a career which spanned 177 ODIs and yielded 3468 runs, the fifth-highest for his country. Ashraful also played 61 Tests - becoming the youngest player to score a hundred - and 23 T20Is and was active in domestic cricket as recently as two years ago.

But his own career was not without its ups and downs. In 2013, he received a lengthy ban from all BCB-related cricket activities for match-fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League. He was eventually brought back to the fold three years later and branched out into coaching.

Bangladesh's next assignment is a two-Test series against West Indies starting October 28 in Mirpur. They recently lost in the final of the UAE ODI tri-series against Afghanistan.
