Anilkumar Raju Mandiraju: From International Badminton Courts To Shaping The Future Of Indian Badminton

Badminton is a sport that demands much more than technical ability. It requires discipline, physical conditioning, tactical awareness, mental resilience and the ability to perform consistently under pressure. For Anilkumar Raju Mandiraju, these qualities have shaped both his journey as an international badminton player and his present role as a high-performance coach.
Having represented India at international tournaments and competed against some of the leading players on the circuit, Raju brings first-hand experience of professional badminton to his coaching career. His journey from competitive sport to player development reflects a commitment to sharing his knowledge, strengthening the preparation of aspiring athletes and helping them navigate the demands of national and international competition.
With a career-best BWF World Ranking of 76 in men's doubles, an India senior ranking of No. 4 and a junior ranking of No. 1, Raju has experienced different stages of the competitive badminton pathway. Today, his coaching work spans senior, junior and para-badminton categories, with players under his guidance achieving national titles, international medals and significant ranking milestones.
From Representing India To Building A Career In Coaching
Raju's badminton journey began with a strong foundation in junior-level competition. One of the early highlights of his playing career came in 2007, when he represented India at the Asian Junior Championships in Malaysia.
He also secured several podium finishes at national junior tournaments, including a runner-up position at the 32nd Junior National Badminton Championship in Nellore and the Krishna Khaitan Memorial All India Junior Badminton Tournament in Chennai. He won the 6th All India Union Bank Junior Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru in the same year.
As he progressed into senior badminton, Raju established himself on the national and international circuits. Partnering Venkat Gaurav Prasad in men's doubles, he achieved his career-best world ranking of 76 in January 2017 and represented India at several competitive international events.
His international career included a runner-up finish at the Bangladesh International Challenge in 2016 and a third-place finish at the Nepal International Series in the same year. He also reached the quarter-finals of the India International Series in 2017, while making appearances at tournaments such as the Singapore Open, India Open, Australian Open and Thailand Open Super Series.
At the national level, his achievements included a runner-up finish at the 75th Senior National Badminton Team Championships, victory at the Central Zone Badminton Team Championships and a runner-up position at the All India Senior Ranking Tournament in Bareilly.
These experiences gave him an understanding of the preparation, discipline and competitive mindset required to perform at higher levels. Over time, Raju chose to channel this experience into coaching, taking on the responsibility of helping other players develop their abilities and pursue their competitive ambitions.
Developing Players Across Different Levels Of Competition
Raju's coaching work reflects his involvement with players across different age groups and categories. Rather than focusing on a single competitive segment, his experience includes senior national players, emerging junior shuttlers and para-badminton athletes.
An important association in his coaching career has been with para-badminton player Arati Patil. During his coaching engagement with her in 2022, Patil achieved a career-best world ranking of seventh in the women's singles SU5 category, marking a significant milestone in her international career.
In senior badminton, Raju has worked with women's doubles pair Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam. His coaching involvement has included improving their front-court technical execution and developing their performance through focused training and technical preparation.
The pair went on to become Senior National Champions in the 2024-25 season and achieved a career-best world ranking of 33 in women's doubles.
His coaching portfolio also includes international assignments. As lead technical consultant to Sri Lankan shuttler Dumindu Abeywickrama during his 2025 campaign, Raju contributed to the tactical preparation that helped the player secure consecutive gold medals at the Guatemala International and Venezuela International Challenges.
These experiences have allowed him to work with athletes from different competitive backgrounds while gaining exposure to the technical and tactical demands of international badminton.
Encouraging Young Players Through International Success
A particularly important part of Raju's coaching journey has been his work with junior badminton players, where the focus extends beyond immediate tournament results to building the foundations required for long-term development.
His association with Pavan Suresh and Punit Suresh produced a significant result at the Yonex-Sunrise India Junior International Grand Prix 2026. The boys' doubles pair won their first international gold medal, while achieving an India ranking of No. 4.
The tournament also saw Punit Suresh and Deepak Raj Aditi secure a silver medal in mixed doubles under his coaching guidance, with the pair reaching India's No. 5 ranking.
The same competition featured other Indian junior players who secured podium finishes across different categories, reflecting the growing opportunities available to young badminton talent at the international level.
For coaches working with developing athletes, such tournaments serve an important purpose. They expose players to different playing styles, competitive conditions and the pressure of international matches. They also help identify areas that require further attention in training.
Raju's work with junior players reflects an approach centred on structured preparation, technical improvement and developing the confidence needed to compete against stronger opposition.
Professional Qualifications And A Commitment To Coaching Standards
Alongside his playing and coaching experience, Raju has pursued professional qualifications to strengthen his understanding of modern badminton coaching.
He is an Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) Certified Coach, having received recognition from the organisation that supports India's pursuit of Olympic excellence. He has also completed the online component of the Badminton World Federation's Coach Education Level 1 programme.
His other professional qualifications include recognition through the US Center for SafeSport, as well as completion of the BWF Shuttle Time Course and the BWF National Administrators Course.
These programmes complement his practical experience and reflect his interest in developing a structured and professional approach to athlete training.
For a coach, continuous learning is an important part of staying relevant to the changing demands of competitive sport. Training methods, physical preparation, technical understanding and athlete welfare all play an important role in the development of a modern badminton player.
Raju's professional development reflects an effort to combine his experience as an international competitor with recognised coaching education and standards of athlete safety.
KBA Diamond Jubilee India International Challenge 2026: Another International Podium Finish
One of the latest highlights of Raju's coaching journey came at the YONEX-SUNRISE KBA Diamond Jubilee India International Challenge 2026, held in Bengaluru from October 27 to November 1.
At the BWF-sanctioned international tournament, his women's doubles pair, Ashwini Bhat K. and Shikha Gautam, delivered an impressive performance to finish as runners-up and secure the silver medal.
The Indian pair began their campaign with a victory over Aradhana Balachandra and Taarini Suri in the Round of 32. They followed it with a straight-games win against Deepta Sathish and Karnika Srees in the Round of 16 before defeating Aditi Bhatt and Shravani Walekar in the quarter-finals.
The semi-final presented a tougher challenge, with the pair facing Neysa Cariappa A. and Pravandhika Raghavan. After splitting the first two games, Bhat and Gautam produced a strong performance in the deciding game to secure their place in the final.
In the title clash, they faced Japan's Mei Sudo and Mai Tanabe. Despite losing the opening game, the Indian pair fought back to take the match into a deciding third game. The contest eventually went down to a narrow finish, with the Japanese pair winning 21-13, 13-21, 21-19.
The silver medal was another important achievement for the pair and a notable addition to Raju's coaching portfolio. Their campaign demonstrated the importance of tactical adaptability, match preparation and the ability to respond to pressure during high-level international competition.
For Raju, the result also reinforced the value of sustained preparation and the experience gained from competing against international opposition.
The Importance Of Building A Stronger Badminton Ecosystem
Raju's journey reflects the different stages involved in developing a successful badminton player. From early exposure to the sport and junior-level competition to senior national tournaments and international events, each stage requires appropriate guidance, preparation and opportunities.
His experience as a player allows him to understand the challenges athletes encounter while progressing through these stages. Competitive badminton involves more than learning techniques and improving physical fitness. Players must also develop match awareness, decision-making abilities, mental strength and the discipline to maintain consistent training routines.
The role of a coach is therefore not limited to preparing athletes for individual tournaments. It also involves helping them understand their strengths, work on areas that need improvement and develop the confidence to compete at increasingly demanding levels.
Equally important is the need to create an environment that encourages young players to pursue their ambitions while understanding the commitment required to succeed in professional sport.
A Continued Commitment To Developing Future Champions
From representing India at the Asian Junior Championships in 2007 to competing on the international senior circuit and now guiding players towards national and international success, M. Anil Kumar Raju's journey has remained closely connected to badminton.
His coaching associations with nationally ranked senior players, para-badminton athletes and emerging junior shuttlers demonstrate the range of his involvement in the sport. The recent silver medal at the KBA Diamond Jubilee India International Challenge 2026 adds another milestone to a coaching career that continues to develop.
As Indian badminton looks to strengthen its presence across international competitions, experienced coaches have an important role in identifying talent, improving performance standards and preparing athletes for the challenges of elite sport.
For Raju, the transition from being an athlete to guiding other players represents an opportunity to contribute to the sport in a different capacity. His journey reflects a continued commitment to learning, developing competitive talent and helping players turn their potential into meaningful achievements on the badminton court.
