Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro are reportedly returning for a third film in the Sicario series.

A sequel to the original Sicario film was released in 2018, though Brolin and del Toro were the only leads to return.

Now, Deadline has reported all three stars are reprising their roles in Sicario 3, which is currently in the works from Black Label Media and Thunder Road.

Padraic McKinley (The Weight) will direct, while Steven Knight will write the script, according to the publication.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the outlet notes that a draft of the script has already been written, with McKinley and Knight fine tuning it with notes from stars with the aim of getting filming at the beginning of 2027.

The first Sicario film, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Taylor Sheridan, was released in 2015, and went on to receive significant critical acclaim including three Oscar nominations.

The film centred on Blunt’s character Kate Macer, an FBI special agent who’s recruited to join a Department of Defense covert task force targeting a Mexican drug cartel.

The second film – subtitled Day of the Soldado – saw Stefano Sollima take over directorial duties, and received less favourable reviews than the first, earning scores of 62% from critics on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes compared to 91% for the original.

The sequel followed a federal border agent (Brolin), who joins forces with Del Toro’s character in a bid to stop the Mexican drug cartels from trafficking terrorists across the border into the US.

Blunt has had a big year, having starred in the hit summer sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, as well as recently wrapping production on A Quiet Place.

Del Toro recently received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in One Battle After Another, while Brolin will next be seen in 20th Century's Whalefall, which you can watch a trailer for below:
