PTPTN borrowers can negotiate loan restructuring, deferment

Translate

KUALA LUMPUR: Borrowers struggling to repay their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans can negotiate a repayment restructuring or apply for a deferment.

The Higher Education Ministry said the government recognised the financial difficulties faced by borrowers genuinely struggling to settle their debts.

"As of Aug 31, 2026, PTPTN's loan repayment arrears stood at RM10.7 billion, involving 1.16 million borrowers," the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply.

This was in response to Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH-Port Dickson), who asked for the latest figures on PTPTN debt and the number of borrowers in arrears.

The ministry said initiatives were ongoing to ensure PTPTN's long-term financial sustainability, including refining loan terms and conditions to better target assistance based on the agency's capacity.

It added that repayment collection would be strengthened through enforcement and strategic cooperation with government and corporate agencies.
