Gayle King stunned after learning dissenting Clancy trial juror was a Black man

"CBS Mornings" co-host Gayle King was stunned after learning that the lone dissenting juror in the Lindsay Clancy trial was purportedly a Black man during a Friday interview.

Paula Devlin, one of the jurors who was part of the 11-person majority in favor of finding Clancy not criminally responsible for strangling her three young children, explained that the lone holdout was a Black man and the only person of color on the jury in an interview with King on the network morning show.

"Whoa. I have to sit with that for just a second," said King, who appeared visibly flustered by the revelation.

Devlin also said ages among the jurors ranged between 22 and "70-ish."

Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial last week after jurors could not agree on a verdict. They told the court they were split 11-1, with the lone male holdout being the only one voting to convict Clancy of first-degree murder for the deaths of her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan.

A fellow juror, Nick Dargie, 25, told ABC News that the lone holdout juror at one point attempted to mimic the way Clancy killed her three kids with an exercise band and water bottle.

"He took the exercise band out of the bag, grabbed an empty water bottle and tied the band around the water bottle and pulled it," Dargie said. "I was just so shocked that he did that."

"I was shocked, it didn't make any sense to me. Like, we're not in here to play detective or it's not a game of Clue. Like, this is serious. I asked him why," he added.

Dargie said the holdout juror refused to explain how witness testimony helped prove his stance.

"There was several times I would ask him to show us evidence or, you know, describe a witness testimony that helped to prove what he was saying, and ... he couldn't," Dargie said. "There wasn't a single piece of evidence or witness testimony that he used to prove why he was thinking the way he was, which is why we ultimately sent in that note."

Dargie was referring to the note sent by the jury foreperson, who reported that one juror was refusing to follow the court's instructions on reasonable doubt.

Curtis Houck, the Managing Editor of the NewsBusters division of the Media Research Center, a media watchdog group, helped the clip go viral by sharing it in a social media post and summarizing the exchange.

He later spoke to Fox News Digital about the clip, arguing the host's surprise was one of many responses from media figures that speak volumes about American culture.

"The woke women propping up these 11 jurors and either directly or indirectly smearing this holdout juror have had their lives completely upended by this stunning declaration. King — whose best friend Oprah recently taped a sympathetic, pro-Clancy special — came off as though she had just been hit by a proverbial bus, meaning she clearly thought he was a White male she could stereotype," he said. 

"The fact that she further pressed for information about his age showed the dangers this holdout juror is facing, now that he has been identified by gender, race, and a rough age," Houck added. "King will now be known by many for this cartoonish reaction."
