Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain arguably represents the peak of MGS gameplay mechanics, but some of the best things about the older titles are also lost in the final installment. Over a decade later, it's about to look a little less like itself and more like one of the series’ oldest entries.

The overhaul comes courtesy of a new mod that promises to bring a lot of “definitive subsistence”—if the nostalgia isn’t enough. An “anniversary” trailer for Metal Gear Solid 5: Definitive Subsistence has now announced its arrival, with the mod reworking how players approach missions and taking inspiration from Metal Gear Solid and older Metal Gear games. Rather than simply adding more weapons or missions to Konami’s open-world stealth game, Definitive Subsistence changes what Snake has access to when he steps onto the battlefield and takes on missions.

Created by modder Mohtal Gear, Definitive Subsistence embraces the popular On-Site Procurement (OSP) system from the old Metal Gear games. So, Snake can now choose to enter Shadow Moses with limited supplies and find additional weapons and equipment during the mission.

The Phantom Pain allowed players to select a large loadout before deploying and gradually expand their arsenal through Mother Base. Definitive Subsistence removes much of that preparation, so you can now head into missions without bringing weapons or items and instead rely on equipment you discover along the way. You can obtain every base weapon in Metal Gear Solid 5 through OSP. For this, you have to search the environment and make use of what you find rather than simply choosing your preferred arsenal before deployment.

Enemies are also a more important source of equipment in Metal Gear Solid 5: Definitive Subsistence. You can interrogate an enemy to cause them to drop a random support weapon first and then an item. You can also take an enemy’s handgun by holding them up or using a knife. Searching enemies who have been neutralized can provide additional weapons and equipment, giving players another reason to pay attention to what is happening around them.

The OSP system is a clear highlight of the mod, but it's not the only thing that it introduces. For example, Definitive Subsistence adds more weapons to the base Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain experience and expands the selection of firearms carried by enemies. Its current version includes new bionic arms and weapons that were not previously available during the main missions. It also allows characters, including Ocelot and Quiet, to be used in the open world.

Players can also discover radios around the world and use them to call for support from Snake’s allies. Depending on the situation, that can include D-Dog, D-Horse, and Quiet. It gives exploration another practical purpose, particularly for players choosing to enter an area without a conventional loadout.

Interestingly, the mod’s name is itself a reference to previous Metal Gear projects released to make the games better. Metal Gear Solid 2 received an expanded version called Substance, while Metal Gear Solid 3 was followed by Subsistence. And finally, we have Definitive Subsistence, which aims to rejuvenate The Phantom Pain with new content and even better improvements to existing features.

Definitive Subsistence is available for the PC version of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, but you wouldn’t want to use it during FOB missions according to the modder’s instructions. The standalone version is also incompatible with Infinite Heaven (another The Phantom Pain mod), although an alpha version designed to work with Infinite Heaven was released on September 14. The alpha version is still in testing and may contain bugs, though.

For anyone who knows The Phantom Pain inside out, Definitive Subsistence could make familiar locations feel considerably less comfortable. Going into a mission without a carefully prepared arsenal means improvisation becomes part of the infiltration again. It is a relatively straightforward change, but it could make Metal Gear Solid 5 feel closer to the tense, resource-conscious style associated with the series’ most iconic games.
