Mike Johnson To Step Down From House Republican Leadership After Democrats’ Blowout Victories In The Midterms

House Speaker Mike Johnson will not stay on as Republican leader when Democrats take control of the chamber in January, according to multiple news outlets.
Hakeem Jeffries is in line to become the next speaker, after four years as minority leader. Democrats are expected to have a majority of around 75 seats, a far cry from the razor thin margin that Republicans had during Johnson’s leadership.
Johnson’s decision may ignite a race for Republican leader, with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and current House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) among the potential candidates.
Johnson was elected speaker in 2023, after a protracted process after his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted after only 10 months in the job.
