Govt highlights public economic gains from national strategic projects

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has underscored its commitment to ensuring that national strategic projects (PSN) go beyond physical infrastructure development to deliver direct and measurable economic benefits to local communities nationwide.
Assistant Deputy for the Development of Economic Zones and Strategic Projects at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Suroto, emphasized that modern infrastructure must function as the primary engine for regional connectivity, enhanced public mobility, and broader economic empowerment.
"The success of national strategic projects is measured not only by their physical completion and the realization of investments, but also by improvements in connectivity, job creation, the growth of economic activity, increased productivity, and the social and economic benefits experienced by the public," Suroto told ANTARA on Saturday.
To illustrate this impact, the government highlighted flagship urban transport and industrial developments, such as the North-South line of the Jakarta MRT encompassing phases I, 2A, and 2B with a total investment valued at approximately Rp49.8 trillion (US$2.77 billion).
Currently serving the Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI route with downtown expansions scheduled for 2030, the mass transit system handled 46.5 million passengers in 2025—averaging roughly 127,000 daily—with ridership projected to surge to 999,000 passengers per day by 2035.
In the industrial sector, strategic initiatives like the Weda Bay Industrial Estate in North Maluku have proven instrumental in expanding employment opportunities and driving human resource development, with PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) having absorbed over 100,000 workers by 2018 and workforce demands projected to reach 120,000 people by 2026.
Furthermore, nationwide dam construction projects continue to fortify food security by providing vital irrigation, expanding raw water availability, mitigating floods, and generating clean energy through hydroelectric power plants.
Official figures reveal that from 2016 through October 29, 2026, a cumulative total of 250 national strategic projects have been successfully completed, representing an aggregate investment value reaching Rp2,396 trillion (US$133.11 billion).
For the current year, six projects have reached completion as of September out of an annual target of ten.
An additional four projects remain on track to wrap up by December, while another 30 strategic initiatives actively remain in various stages of construction.
