Manila Archbishop Cardinal Advincula to get honorary doctorate from UST


MANILA, Philippines—Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula will receive the degree of Doctor of Theology, honoris causa, from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), which is among the university’s highest distinctions.
The conferment will take place at the Dr. Robert S. Sy Ballroom of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building, on Oct. 15.
According to a university circular released on Oct. 9, UST said the degree recognizes Advincula’s contributions to priestly formation, ecclesiastical leadership and pastoral service.

“More than an academic celebration, this solemn occasion is an expression of thanksgiving to God for the gift of a faithful shepherd whose life and ministry reflect Christ’s loving care for his people,” the university said.

Advincula is an alumnus of UST, where he studied for priesthood and pursued canon law.
He later continued his studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, also known as Angelicum, in Rome, where he earned a licentiate in canon law.

His episcopal motto, “Audiam,” which means “I will listen” in Latin, emphasizes the importance of listening in Christian leadership, according to the university.

“May his example inspire us to cultivate listening hearts, remain steadfast in our commitment to truth, and respond generously to the needs of the Church and society,” UST said.
Advincula also received a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Theology, honoris causa, from De La Salle University in June 2023. /apl
