After 28 seasons, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has a massive history of characters who could return at any moment, and the show's surprising story shake-up leaves room for some major players to step back into the fold. With Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and the rest of the SVU team approaching the show's landmark 600th episode, the milestone is set to be celebrated with familiar faces and a case that pulls out all the stops. While the episode will celebrate the show's achievement, it also has to be a functional part of the show's current season, which has shaken things up with its cast early on.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 28 has only been back on the air for a few weeks, but in that time, the show has managed to set the ball in motion for a massive milestone episode. Most recently, the series pushed Benson to make a tough call for the team, benching one of her own. During Law & Order: SVU's third episode of the season, Benson orders detective Bruno (Kevin Kane) to take leave after failing to let go of a disturbing investigation, and while he'll be returning to the series, his absence leaves space for potential returns.
While there will be a period of absence for Bruno, his temporary departure creates some breathing room for past SVU cast members to jump back into the fray. While Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler is already confirmed, the possibilities for who else could be back range far and wide through SVU's expansive universe.
Bruno’s Suspension In SVU Season 28 Explained
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 28 episode 3, "Anonymity", gave Benson reason to doubt Bruno's judgment after a brutal case left him struggling to let go. The team began the episode investigating a dark web operation, The Gate, that contained information about the sexual abuse and exploitation of young children. Bruno became invested in a thorough investigation of the information, immersing himself in order to find any identifiers that could help locate the victims. Taking things on by himself rather than waiting for the team, Bruno overextended himself and pushed past his limit in pursuit of the cold hard truth.
While the intentions behind his action were admirable, the work quickly began to consume him in a way that Benson recognized. While it wasn't necessarily the call she wanted to make, ordering Bruno to take leave while the rest of the team worked the case was the best way to keep him from spiraling further out of control. Benson, too, has struggled to maintain her professional boundaries at times, and recognizing the issue for Bruno while simultaneously being able to do something about it from her position of authority is the right call. Bruno's temporary suspension, Kane confirmed, will come with some time away from SVU.
Question 1 of 3
Bruno’s Absence Allows Benson’s Biggest Allies To Return
With SVU's 600th episode coming in just a few short weeks, Bruno's absence has afforded the series some breathing room that past cast members could step in to fill. With Meloni already confirmed to be back, there are other previous Law & Order: Special Victims Unit cast members who could step in to be more fruitful or, at least, unexpected parts of the milestone hour. While it's already been shared that SVU's milestone episode won't be a massive reunion, characters like Nick Amaro (Danny Pino), Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters), or Rafael Barba (Raul Esparza) could be interesting to bring into the mix.
Amaro, who joined SVU after Stabler's departure, could be a great grab in order to give true perspective on just how much Benson has grown throughout the show's run. As one of Benson's earliest partners, Cassidy could be a great way to pay homage to both her professional journey and her personal one, as the pair shared a complex romantic connection, as well. Barba, who supported Benson during a tough time professionally, could be a great sounding board to see return, as well. With a wealth of former cast members to choose from, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has the opportunity to bring back a nostalgic character to drive its big story forward.
