Hunt: Showdown 1896 is a bold take on Crytek's perpetual PVP space, and it's about to get a lot bloodier for the Halloween season. The intense online extraction shooter feels like a fully horrific take on Red Dead Revolver, forcing players to venture into a haunted Old West for their very survival.
The game is poised for its biggest expansion yet with the 2.9 update. Titled "Blood Testament," the update expands the scope of the world and introduces a host of new challenges for players to shoot their way through (or evade in the heat of battle). In an interview with Screen Rant, Lead Technical Designer Rohan Rao and Creative Director Stefan Heinrich broke down their intentions and inspirations for "Blood Testament" and teased the game's future through the rest of 2026 and beyond.
The Team Behind Hunt: Showdown 1896 On The Balance Between Horror And Action
Crysis proved to be a real hit for Crytek and has influenced their approach to game design ever since. That extends to Hunt: Showdown 1896. "Crytek is known for creating immersive, highly realistic worlds," Rohan Rao explained. "That's what we take as a goal for every game."
"Thanks to our own proprietary technology like CRYENGINE, we can make real worlds with high visual fidelity. No other engine looks like ours. Pair that with our technology like CRYSPATIAL, and our cutting-edge audio becomes another distinct pillar and a key part of Hunt. Our semi-open worlds give players agency, and we combine it with believable settings and a complete package; from art to narrative, audio and design, all these elements we have developed throughout our history are reflected in Hunt today."
That's clear in the visual design and world-building baked into Hunt: Showdown 1896, which leans into boththe gothic tradition and the western aesthetic for a blend of period-piece tenor and horrific tension. According to the team, the game was originally designed as a co-op multiplayer game rather than a primarily PvP experience.
The back-and-forth over this sparked several discussions, according to Rao—at least until someone suggested a PvP(vE) model that could encourage players to hunt one another down while still contending with the dangers of the larger world. The game has been a solid success for the developer, with the new "Blood Testament" content pack expanding the setting further.
"We leaned heavily into gothic horror for this one," Stegan Heinrich explained. "This expansion made a lot of sense to the team, "Especially knowing that we were releasing around Halloween. Blood and the occult became two of the key themes guiding the content, and both fit naturally into the world of Hunt: Showdown 1896. The new Boss was another major source of inspiration. We wanted the surrounding content to feel cohesive, so the atmosphere, themes, and gameplay all reinforced that darker gothic-horror direction."
Hunt: Showdown 1896's Future Is All About Appeasing Players And Testing Developers
That fusion of horror and action is baked into the very DNA of Hunt: Showdown 1896, from the subtle world-building to the moment-to-moment gameplay. It's a game that rewards a maverick approach to action that suits a cowboy game, but with all the inherent fear that comes with playing in a gothic horror sandbox.
Still, the game depends on a loyal player base to stay on track and evolve with the rest of the industry. Rao noted that balancing fan expectations and developer ambitions can be tricky but rewarding, especially when the two paths meet naturally.
Rohan Rao explained how "Hunt: Showdown 1896 uses horror as one of its strongest themes, so the Blood Moon is a natural extension of that vision. We want additions like this to do more than just look atmospheric—they should also have an impact on how the game feels and plays, adding to that sense of tension and uncertainty."
"As a live service game, our development process is built around fast iteration. We’re constantly exploring ideas, testing them, and refining them so that when we bring something to the game, it’s something we’re genuinely proud of." This has clearly been one of the elements the developers have taken to heart, given the expansions' success with fans.
[The players] completely defied our expectations -- and even our plans!
The rest of 2026 and the start of 2027 are already shaping up to be exciting for fans. "Chapter 2" and "Chapter 3" are currently planned for update 2.9, with a final update for the year slotted for December as update 2.10. After that, the team teased that 2027 is already set to be "a big year" for Hunt: Showdown 1896.
Looking at what the game and this world have surprised them the most so far, Rao and Heinrich noted that "The passion our community has for the game continues to surprise us every day. They constantly keep us on our toes, and their enthusiasm has had a real impact on how the game has evolved."
Hunt: Showdown 1896 will continue: "We were especially surprised by how quickly and enthusiastically the community rallied together to unlock Bloodskin during the Make Them Bleed Community Event. They completely defied our expectations -- and even our plans! Seeing players come together and push the event beyond what we thought was possible was an incredible moment for us."
