Outlander: Blood of My Blood star teases season 2 arc: "She's lost a bit of hope"

Things certainly weren't the smoothest of rides for Julia in the first season of Outlander: Blood of My Blood – and it turns out that things aren't exactly going to be any better as we veer into season 2.

Having been in a car accident and then transported back to 1715 (instead of her time period of 1923), Julia had to think on her feet to ensure her survival, but ended up working as a maid for the sinister Lord Lovat (Tony Curran).

Her time at Castle Leathers throughout season 1 saw her having to hide her pregnancy, go through quite an arduous labour and finally, be reunited with Henry (Jeremy Irvine).

But trouble didn't stop following them in the finale as Arch Bug and his men pursued them on their way to the stones, as they formed a plan to time travel with baby William. As for whether they succeeded or not will unfold in season 2 but actress Hermione Corfield does hint that Julia is set to go through quite a transformative period.

Chatting exclusively to Radio Times about what's to come in her character's emotional journey, Corfield said: "I think season 1, she's led by confusion – obviously because she's ended up in a different time period. She's working out how everything has come to be the way it is and then she strategises how she's going to get back to Henry, how she's going to get back to Claire."

She continues: "I think in this season, we find her at a point where she's lost a bit of hope. She’s tried all these means to get her life back together and it's not gone to plan. So, I think this season is about her regrouping and re-strategising, finding new means to try and get away from Lovat and be back with Henry and protect her baby. That's a whole thing now.

"She's got to negotiate Lovat believing that he is the prophecy, whilst trying not to be stuck in that life with him."

Of course, it wouldn't quite be an Outlander series without its fair share of drama and strife – but here's to hoping Julia gets some happy moments soon!

As per the official synopsis for the new season: "In the second season, the lovers are separated once again as the Scottish Highlands are split in two by the 1715 Jacobite Rising, thrusting the clans into war and forcing them to choose a side in the rebellion.

"With the fiery crosses lit, Brian and his cousin Murtagh must return to Castle Leathers and pledge to fight beside his father, the scheming Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat. Ellen reluctantly returns to Castle Leoch to find her brothers, Colum and Dougal, feuding over how to respond to the call to arms, and cleverly devises a plan to protect Clan MacKenzie whatever the outcome."

It continues: "Meanwhile Henry and Julia Beauchamp, finally reunited after their unexpected journey back in time, are ready to return to their own time and their daughter, Claire. When their plan goes horribly awry, the couple is parted once more. Separated from his love, Henry must grapple with his mental health as he fights to find his way back to Julia, who is forced to return to Castle Leathers and contend with her sinister husband, Lord Lovat."
