Michael Jackson‘s legendary Super Bowl halftime performance is getting a closer look.
More than three decades after the King of Pop took the stage at Super Bowl XXVII, Hulu and ESPN are revisiting the making of the groundbreaking 1993 performance in a new documentary titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, arriving in February 2027.
Directed by Bao Nguyen, whose previous credits include Netflix’s The Greatest Night in Pop, the feature-length documentary will explore the behind-the-scenes journey that brought Jackson’s halftime show to life. The film will also include never-before-seen footage of the pop superstar and his team, giving fans a new perspective on a performance that helped reshape one of television’s biggest annual events.
A newly released teaser shows a glimpse of the spectacle, with footage of Jackson commanding the stage at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., in his signature military-inspired outfit as thousands of fans fill the venue, chanting his name. The clip also previews the documentary’s title before revealing its February premiere on Hulu and ESPN.
Jackson’s appearance at Super Bowl XXVII on Jan. 31, 1993, marked a turning point for the halftime show. Instead of a typical intermission between the game’s two halves, the performance was an event of its own. It helped establish the halftime stage as a destination for some of the biggest names in music.
Jackson was already a force on the charts long before he even took the Super Bowl stage. As a solo artist, he scored 13 No. 1 hits over the course of his career on the Billboard Hot 100, including classics such as “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Black or White.” His album Thriller was also monumental. The 1982 blockbuster spent 37 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, producing seven Hot 100 top hits — an extraordinary run that helped cement Jackson’s status as one of pop’s most influential hitmakers.
