Worn-out tents, flooding put displaced Gazans at risk as winter sets in

RAMALLAH: The Palestinian Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ministry has called for immediate international action to avert a deepening humanitarian and environmental catastrophe in the Gaza Strip as winter sets in.

The ministry warned that the crisis could claim more lives, particularly among children, older people and patients.

It said the continued Israeli aggression against Gaza had worsened the humanitarian crisis and prevented recovery efforts, noting that the first rainfall in recent hours exposed the dire conditions facing forcibly displaced Palestinians across the territory.

Nearly two million Palestinians are estimated to be living in about 270,000 tents and displacement sites across Gaza's governorates, with 60 to 85 per cent of the shelters worn out and unfit for use after nearly three years of displacement.

More than 400,000 displaced Palestinians live in high-risk areas vulnerable to flooding or located near the coastline, the ministry said.

It warned that the destruction of infrastructure, particularly sewage networks and drainage systems, further intensified the risks. Displaced residents also lack winter clothing, blankets, mattresses and safe heating, while electricity outages and fuel shortages leave them exposed to life-threatening cold and rainfall.

The ministry said international efforts must move beyond issuing appeals to immediately implementing relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2720 and 2803, and taking concrete measures to address Israeli violations.

It called for immediate pressure on Israel to open all border crossings and ensure the unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance in quantities matching the needs of Gaza's population, with access guaranteed to all areas.

The ministry called for the urgent entry of fuel and equipment to operate water and sewage pumps, clear accumulated rainwater and wastewater, and carry out emergency flood interventions.

It urged the international community to provide winter shelter necessities, including temporary housing, weather-resistant tents, plastic sheeting, thermal insulation, and equipment to repair damaged homes.

It also called for the delivery of winter clothing, blankets, mattresses and heating supplies, particularly for infants, children, older people and patients.

The ministry urged an emergency health response, including medicines, medical supplies, clean water and sterilisation materials, alongside measures to combat water contamination and disease outbreaks linked to deteriorating environmental conditions. -BERNAMA
