The Fitzroy River in central Queensland has been approved to host rowing events at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics after passing a technical assessment.

The venue, which is also known as a crocodile habitat, had faced criticism over concerns about strong currents, flooding and whether it could provide fair racing conditions.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli confirmed the approval in parliament, saying the river had passed the assessment “with flying colours”.

World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide also backed the venue after reviewing independent technical studies and inspecting the site.

The Fitzroy River will host rowing, para rowing, canoe sprint and para canoe events at the Games.

Officials said the river has enough space for an international-standard course, including eight lanes and a 2,000-metre racing distance. They also said no widening or dredging would be required.

World Rowing president Jean-Christophe Rolland said the assessment showed the river could provide fair competition conditions during the Games.

Organisers will now move ahead with detailed planning, design and construction work at the Rockhampton venue.
