Nutrition agency ecosystem must create new local producers: Minister

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Maman Abdurrahman urged the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) ecosystem to involve not only existing businesses, but also nurture new regional producers through sustainable food supply chains.
"Besides the involvement of MSME business entities, we also emphasize building the supply chain ecosystem," Abdurrahman said at the International Fora for Government Credit Programs in Badung, Bali, on Thursday (Oct 29).
According to Abdurrahman, supply needs in the BGN ecosystem can become an opportunity for communities to develop productive businesses, from chicken farming and fish cultivation to vegetable production.
He said supply chain development needs to be directed at creating new economic activity according to each region’s needs and potential.
He explained forming the ecosystem could open opportunities for regions that previously lacked certain production activities to start developing businesses needed in the BGN supply chain.

One example is the development of chicken farming and fish cultivation in regions that previously did not focus on those two sectors. Supply needs in the BGN ecosystem are seen as able to encourage people to start production activities.
According to him, similar opportunities are also open for vegetable farmers. Regions that previously faced limited buyers could now gain market access through the supply chain being formed.
As a result, development of the BGN ecosystem is expected not only to widen the involvement of existing MSMEs, but also to encourage new producers able to meet food needs.
Abdurrahman revealed about 69,000 MSMEs are now involved in the BGN supply chain. However, the government does not yet see that number as a final achievement and is still working to widen business participation.
He stressed that widening MSME participation must go hand in hand with building supply chains that connect production activities with market needs.
