'Indian 3' revival confirmed: Here’s what we know about Kamal Haasan and Shankar’s film production and release plan-exclusive

The future of Kamal Haasan’s 'Indian 3' has taken a positive turn, with the makers officially confirming the revival of the long-delayed project. The announcement has grabbed attention among fans, bringing the iconic Senapathy back into the spotlight after months of uncertainty surrounding the film.

Directed by S. Shankar, the third installment was largely shot alongside 'Indian 2,' but its progress stalled following the sequel’s disappointing reception. With the production house now signalling that the project is back on track, expectations are rising for the film’s return to the big screen. The team is reportedly aiming to complete the remaining work and release 'Indian 3' during the Pongal festival in 2027.

'Indian 3' completed 75% of filming

A source close to the production house confirmed to Etimes that filming for the Kamal Haasan-starrer is set to resume.

“Filming for Indian 3 is resuming,” the insider informed, adding that nearly 75% of the film had already been completed during the production of 'Indian 2.' Despite the substantial progress, the makers reportedly put the project on hold following the negative reception to the previous film. The team is now said to be focused on finishing the remaining work, with the Pongal 2027 or early 2027 release being considered the target release window.

However, an official announcement confirming the revised shooting schedule and release date is still awaited.

Kamal Haasan returns as Senapathy in a period drama

Unlike a straightforward continuation, 'Indian 3' is reportedly designed as a prequel that explores the history of Senapathy and his roots. The story is expected to take audiences into a period setting, with Kamal Haasan portraying the younger version of his character, Veerasekaran Balram, Senapathy’s father. Kajal Aggarwal is also expected to play a significant role in the historical narrative.

The film is likely to expand the franchise’s themes of corruption, justice, and resistance while connecting its past events to the story established in the earlier installments.

About 'Indian 3' cast and crew

Apart from Kamal Haasan and Kajal Aggarwal, the film features returning cast members Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Priya Bhavani Shankar, and Bobby Simha.

Anirudh Ravichander

has composed the music, with Ravi Varman handling cinematography. Although the production delay left the film’s future uncertain, the reported decision to resume filming has renewed interest in the franchise. With a substantial portion already completed, fans will be watching closely for confirmation of the next schedule and whether 'Indian 3' can meet its proposed Pongal 2027 release target.
