East Nusa Tenggara'squake death toll hits 14, BNPB says

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said 14 people had died after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), with two people severely injured and 11 sustaining minor injuries as of 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Based on updated data as of 12:30 p.m. WIB, 14 fatalities have been recorded, along with two severe injuries and 11 minor injuries,” BNPB spokesman Berton SP Panjaitan said.

“The data is still being collected, verified and validated on the ground,” he added.

Three deaths were recorded in Sikka District, six in Manggarai and five in East Manggarai. Injuries were reported in Sikka, Nagekeo, Manggarai and East Manggarai. About 2,000 residents have evacuated to safer locations, BNPB said.

“Most residents evacuated after strong tremors and a tsunami early warning that was temporarily issued following the main earthquake,” Panjaitan said.

Preliminary data showed 54 homes were severely damaged, nine moderately damaged and 11 lightly damaged. Five health facilities, one school, a Bulog warehouse, three places of worship and six government offices were also damaged.

Manggarai was among the hardest-hit areas, with 29 homes severely damaged, nine moderately damaged and nine lightly damaged. Five health facilities and one school were also damaged.

In neighboring East Manggarai, 23 homes were reported severely damaged.

Preliminary assessments in Nagekeo found two homes severely damaged, one moderately damaged and two lightly damaged. Two places of worship and five government offices were also affected.

Reports from the affected areas indicated severe traffic congestion and continuing power outages.
