Avengers: Doomsday directors tease "very surprising ending" as fans worry about Secret Wars delay

Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo have teased a "very surprising ending" for the much-anticipated film. The film, which hits cinemas in December, will see Robert Downey return to the franchise as Dr Doom, alongside a huge list of Marvel stars.

Speaking to Fandango about balancing such a large cast with a focused story, Anthony Russo explained: "It's a two and a half hour movie or so, and you're sitting through it, and it's a focused propulsive narrative that has like an organizing principle at its center, and everything has to orbit around that.

"That's part of the creative challenge for Joe and I – just figuring out how that what that orbit is and how it all smashes together."

Joe then teased: "I think people are going to be surprised. It's a very surprising ending. It's a very surprising movie and that's all we'll say about it."

The directing duo had previously stated that the film's cast is so big they haven't announced all the names yet.

"The cast is so large, and we've announced some of the cast, and we haven't announced some of the cast," Anthony shared.

"Joe and I are still very deep in the process of finishing Doomsday, where we say we're not done with the movie until they pry it out of our cold, dead hands."

He continued: "You know, it's a very iterative process for us from the time of conception all the way to final delivery of the film, so it is alive, and we are still working with it."

The directors' comments come amid rumours that production on Avengers: Secret Wars, which was supposed to begin in two weeks has now been delayed until November.

The news has left fans on Reddit worried that the film will miss its announced December 17, 2027 release date.

One fan commented: "May 2028 seems like an inevitably at this point, although it's possible they could've already filmed stuff for Secret Wars during Doomsday production which is why they are starting filming again a bit later this year."

Avengers: Doomsday is released in cinemas on 16 December.
