Ghosts Early 2026 Return Unveils Major Cast Shake-Up

While Ghosts season 6 won't officially return until 2027, there will be two specials that are part of the season's episode count. One of those is the Halloween special, and the first trailer is out, making up for Ghosts' 2027 wait.

CBS made the disappointing decision to hold the spirit-filled sitcom until the new year, making way for the new supernatural sitcom Eternally Yours. Both shows come from the same creative team, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, and there are elements to the vampire show that make it the perfect companion to Ghosts.

However, the Ghosts season 5 finale left viewers with major concerns, especially when it came to Pete. He started to disappear while in London due to being away from the manor for too long, and just before Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and Kyle (Ben Fledman) crossed the boundary, he completely vanished. CBS has remained extremely tight-lipped about whether Richie Moriarty will be back, although he was included on a cast list, hinting at a Ghosts fake-out.

Ghosts Is Returning In 2026 For Its Halloween Episode

Alberta, Pete, Hetty, Sam, and Jay on Ghosts

When CBS announced that Ghosts season 6 would be held until 2027, it came with the good news that there would be a Halloween special. Halloween specials have become a popular part of the series from the first season. This is when some of the rules about ghosts change, such as allowing spirits to come back from the other side, but this is the first time a two-part Halloween special has happened.

There will also be a two-part Christmas special, with details still to come, and both specials will make up part of the sixth season. So, with four episodes arriving in 2026, it eases off some of the excruciating wait.

As teases for the Halloween episode came out during the summer hiatus, there were promises that the Pete problem would be addressed. Of course, this doesn't mean it's solved, but it will be mentioned, and the remaining members of the Main 8 will need to discuss life without their friend around. After all, he has a romantic connection to Alberta. They'd only been together for a season, and she made it clear that she expected Jay and Kyle to bring Pete back in one piece.

There will be more issues to deal with, though. Jay's sister, Bela, is back, and she's decided that Woodstone Manor is the perfect spot for a Halloween party. During San Diego Comic-Con, Port and Wiseman also shared that Hetty's sister would return during the Halloween episode, delving more into their backstory.

Ghosts' 2026 Halloween Special Trailer Reveals 2 Major Absences

On top of Pete's fate in limbo, Rose McIver announced that she wouldn't be in the first part of the season due to maternity leave, but it wasn't clear whether that meant the most important Ghosts character wouldn't be around for the Halloween special or for when the main part of the season started. Everyone had to wait for the Ghosts Halloween trailer, and all that has done is hint that a major cast shake-up is coming, and it makes the wait for Thursday, October 29 even more excruciating.

The trailer for the Halloween special is out, and there are two notable absences. The first is Pete, hinting that the questions about his disappearance won't be fully answered. There is a shot of the spirits sitting in a circle, suggesting some sort of seance in an attempt to connect with Pete's invisible form, but that leads to Hetty getting pulled into a mirror.

The other notable absence is Sam, suggesting that McIver meant her time off would start from the very beginning of the season. The good news is Ghosts season 5 has already set up her temporary exit. She will need to be on set for her in-show movie, but she and Jay have already discussed the idea of having Kyle stay with Jay and the ghosts for that time.

Bringing Feldman in as a series regular offers a way to change dynamics, seeing more interactions with the spirits in the basement, shed, and bunker. At least Kyle deeply cares about Pete, so he'll help the other spirits to figure out what's happened in Ghosts season 6.
