Ministry channels Rp65.2 billion to flood-hit Islamic schools in Aceh

Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs has allocated disaster relief funds worth Rp65.2 billion (US$3.6 million) to support the recovery of flood-affected Islamic educational institutions in Aceh, including Islamic boarding schools, known domestically as pesantren.

Director General of Pesantren Basnang Said noted that the ministry had distributed the assistance to 956 educational institutions through two schemes: educational operational assistance and building rehabilitation assistance.

"We aim to ensure that educational activities continue uninterrupted and that pesantren can maintain their strategic role in society," he said in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Detailing the allocations, he said the ministry had disbursed around Rp15.3 billion in operational assistance to 305 educational institutions to help them maintain services for students during the recovery period.

Said also highlighted the distribution of nearly Rp50 billion in post-disaster assistance for facilities and infrastructure to 651 institutions. The funding is intended to support building construction and rehabilitation, the provision of adequate learning facilities, and the procurement of supporting equipment.

"This aid is expected to accelerate the recovery of affected educational institutions, enabling them to resume educational activities as soon as possible and ensuring that students can continue learning in a conducive environment," he said.

He added that the ministry expects the relief initiative to help mitigate the impact of the flooding on the education sector and accelerate the recovery of educational activities at Islamic schools.

The official also underscored the importance of strong synergy among the government, pesantren administrators, and other stakeholders to support the recovery of pesantren and enable them to continue serving their educational, religious outreach, and community empowerment functions.
