Khoza bought Rele Mofokeng a house after losing R200k bet

Royal Union Saint-Gilloise attacker Relebohile Mofokeng reportedly made a bold bet with Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza ahead of last season’s league campaign.

The 22-year-old spent four years with the Buccaneers before moving to Belgium in July. During his time at Pirates, Mofokeng won seven trophies, including the league title.

According to his father, Sechaba Mofokeng, the talented winger made a R200,000 bet with Khoza over whether Pirates would end their 14-year wait for a league championship.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Sechaba revealed that the agreement was that Mofokeng would pay the Pirates chairman R200,000 if the team failed to win the league. However, if the Buccaneers lifted the title, Khoza would buy the winger a house of his choice.

“So they made a bet, if they didn’t win the league, he [Mofokeng] would give the Chairman R200,000. He said, if I win the league, the Chairman would buy him any house of his choice,” Sechaba said.

He added that the exchange left his son speechless.

As it turned out, Pirates ended their 14-year league drought by winning the championship last season, with Mofokeng playing an instrumental role in helping the Soweto giants secure the title.

Sechaba also opened up about his son’s relationship with Khoza, explaining that the Pirates chairman had played a significant role in Mofokeng’s life.

“He did so much for me in my life and he taught me a lot about life. I think he deserved to get something back,” Sechaba said.

He further confirmed that Khoza honoured his side of the agreement by buying Mofokeng a house.

“The house is there, he delivered,” Sechaba added.

Mofokeng left Pirates having scored 29 goals in over 120 matches and has already impressed in Belgium in just four months.
