President Prabowo urges regions to join Indonesia ASRI green movement

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto announced plans to convene regional government leaders from across the country to launch the Indonesia ASRI national environmental movement, stressing the need for concerted action across the archipelago.

In a speech monitored online from Jakarta on Wednesday, he said the launch would take place within one or two weeks in the presence of governors, district heads, and speakers of regional parliaments.

Elaborating on the initiative, Prabowo explained that ASRI stands for aman (safe), sehat (healthy), resik (clean), and indah (beautiful).

The president underscored the importance of turning the movement's ideals into reality, saying he envisioned a greener Indonesia with more trees and improved waste management.

He called for Jakarta to kick off the campaign and set an example for other regions by expanding green open spaces and creating vertical gardens on skyscrapers.

"If possible, I want all large buildings to have vertical gardens at the initiative of their owners," Prabowo said, assuring that the central and regional governments would support the initiative.

He praised the Jakarta provincial government for taking concrete steps to clean rivers and improve the management of other water bodies and reservoirs, as well as for its plans to create new parks and jogging tracks.

The head of state went on to emphasize that the movement must cover the entire country, urging all provinces, districts, and cities to step up efforts toward green transitions, responsible waste management, and healthier rivers.

Prabowo introduced the ASRI movement as an initiative to comprehensively transform Indonesia's urban environments, with comprehensive waste management among its key priorities.

Through ASRI, Indonesia seeks to address its persistent waste problems by expanding waste-to-energy conversion and implementing the reduce, reuse, and recycle model.
