Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40K Series Gets Epic New Tease From Mike Flanagan

Film and TV creative Mike Flanagan is hyping Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 series.

At the end of 2022, it was announced that Cavill, a longtime fan of the Games Workshop miniature wargame property, would star in and executive produce a TV adaptation being developed by Amazon MGM Studios. This past July, Flanagan boarded Warhammer 40,000, a.k.a. Wahammer 40K, alongside United Artists, and it was said at the time that he’d already completed outlines for the story and "should soon be moving on to script.” Two months later, Flanagan has shared an epic new tease about this small-screen take on the 40K lore.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly about his TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, Flanagan described Cavill’s Warhammer 40K series as “just a mountain” of a show. This indicates that the project will have a massive scale befitting a property of this magnitude, though Flanagan didn’t provide any specifics. Like Carrie, Warhammer 40K will be a Prime Video-exclusive offering.

The first edition of Warhammer 40K was released in 1987, and the eleventh and current edition of the game came out in June. Taking place many centuries in the future, when humanity battles both aliens and supernatural creatures, the game’s mythology has been fleshed out in spinoff games, novels, comic books, animated TV shows, and video games. The live-action 40K adaptation was officially confirmed in December 2024 to be moving forward.

Prime Video’s Warhammer 40K marks the second time Cavill has boarded a project based off a property he enjoys in real life. He previously played Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher after being a fan of the same-named video game series, with both the TV show and the video games being based off the original Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski. Cavill departed The Witcher series after season 3, and Luke Hemsworth succeeded him as Geralt.

Flanagan’s body of work includes movies like Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, and TV shows like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Both he and Cavill also have experience in the DC Comics media space. The latter played Superman in the DC Extended Universe, and the former co-wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Clayface movie, which takes place within the current DC Universe continuity.

Looking ahead past Warhammer 40K, along with Carrie, Flanagan also wrote and directed The Exorcist: Martyrs, which will be released in theaters in March 2027. Scheduling conflicts with that movie prevented him from helming Clayface, so James Watkins was tapped for that position instead. Flanagan is also still developing his TV adaptation of King's The Dark Tower book series. Cavill's upcoming movies include the live-action Voltron adaptation and the Highlander reboot. The former is expected to be released in 2027, while filming began on the latter at the end of January.

As Warhammer 40,000 continues being developed, all eight episodes of Flanagan’s Carrie premiere Wednesday, October 7, on Prime Video.
