Australia's Firmus to delay IPO, mulls private funding, Bloomberg News reports

By Daniel Ziffer

What's going on?

Australian data centre operator Firmus is set to delay its planned initial public offering (IPO) and is considering raising private capital instead, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Nvidia-backed firm is in talks with existing investors and others to raise capital, according to the report.

Order-taking for the IPO closed as scheduled on Thursday morning, but there was no clear indication of the final pricing or deal structure, Bloomberg reported.

The company is still weighing its options, and deliberations remain ongoing, the report said, adding that details could change.

Firmus did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

The firm is seeking to raise up to $5.5 billion through its IPO, including a greenshoe option, in what could be Australia's second-largest listing on record after Telstra's $10 billion float in 1997.

Earlier this month, Firmus, which counts OpenAI as an anchor customer, priced the IPO at A$11 per share, giving it a valuation of about $30.6 billion, according to a term sheet seen by Reuters.

On Thursday, newspapers reported that Firmus and its advisors were considering reducing the size of the IPO and lowering the per-share price from A$11 to A$8.25.

The deal's initial term sheet had said indicative offers for the IPO were already above the deal's size. But some potential investors told Reuters they were cautious about the company's burgeoning valuation, its ability to execute on its ambitious growth plans, and its hefty debt pile.

Will Firmus fly, or even float?

By Daniel Ziffer

Firmus is the hottest company in Australia, an AI factory set to list with immense opportunity for growth and big questions around its finances and future.

It is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) when it would debut on the Australian stock market and the public could buy and sell shares of the company.

After a flurry of reporting yesterday around a reduced asking price for the IPO, Fund manager and co-founder of Ten Cap Jun Bei Liu says it is unclear if the listing on October 23 will proceed.

"We are still to yet hear whether the IPO is going ahead," she said.

The bookbuild for the float closed today.

Investment banks have stopped taking bids for the initial public offering and will now determine what price the company lists on the Australian Securities Exchange.

It was initially expected the price would be set at $11 a share, valuing the company at close to $44 billion.

"Now it seems the price of $8.30 or even lower has been talked about," Jun Bei Liu told The Business.

She says Ten Cap is not investing in Firmus because "with this business, they are asking for too much faith and too much money upfront for something that they have yet to prove to be built … Firmus is probably one of the most polarising IPOs I have ever seen".

Firmus is not currently listed on the ASX "upcoming floats and listings" webpage.
