Anutin: No return to normal ties with Cambodia for now

Translate

BANGKOK – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Thailand has no plans to reopen border crossings with Cambodia or restore bilateral relations to their previous level until key issues involving territorial disputes, transnational crime and national security are resolved.

Speaking on his programme “Talk with Anutin’s Cabinet” at 09.05 on 31 October, Anutin, who also serves as interior minister, said the government could not yet specify when border crossings would reopen.

He said there was currently no indication that relations with Cambodia would return to their previous level until Thailand’s concerns were addressed, including land and maritime disputes, scam networks and the safety of Thai citizens.

Anutin said the border crossings had been closed for some time and that the government must continue to prioritise Thailand’s national interests.

He cited the need to prevent illegal goods and agricultural products from entering the country, combat transnational criminal networks and address security concerns before considering the restoration of bilateral relations.

The prime minister also said his government would not change its policy solely because of political pressure and would not allow political games to take precedence over the country’s interests.

“Since the border crossings were closed, all economic indicators have improved and people are satisfied,” Anutin said.

He added that the government must consider the wishes of the public when determining its next steps.

“At present, there is no indication that relations will return to their previous level. If we are to hold talks, there are still many steps involved. Right now, we need to do what we want,” Anutin said.
