ABC is officially replacing Tim Bradford at Mid-Wilshire in The Rookie season 9. There are still a few months left before Alexi Hawley's popular procedural returns with new episodes. Despite not being part of ABC's fall 2026 lineup, there hasn't been any shortage of updates for the procedural, as the cast and crew of The Rookie have been some of the most engaged with their fans. It's one of the reasons why the procedural has become a force to be reckoned with when it comes to network TV procedural.

For context, The Rookie season 8 ended with Tim and Lucy Chen finally getting engaged. However, what was supposed to be a cause for celebration quickly turned into a nightmare, when the pair was abducted. The incident is now the launching pad for The Rookie season 9's two-part premiere, but beyond that, there are still a lot of stories to tell. While it's effectively confirmed that Tim and Lucy will survive the ordeal, Eric Winter's character is facing an uncertain future at Mid-Wilshire, as he's officially confirmed to be replaced.

Dulé Hill Will Be The New Watch Commander In The Rookie Season 9

As The Rookie hosted a fun-filled panel at New York Comic-Con 2026, new details have emerged about what to expect from the series beyond Tim and Lucy's current status. The ABC series is bringing in several new cast additions, but arguably the most interesting out of the announcement is the confirmation of Dulé Hill's involvement. Per Hawley, the Psych and Suits alum will be playing “a new watch commander with some stuff going on." For context, Tim was promoted to be the new watch commander in The Rookie season 8 after Wade Grey joined the special FBI task force. The fact that Hill's new character is confirmed to take over that post at Mid-Wilshire means Winter's character will be relieved of that duty, regardless of the reason.

Hawley didn't reveal any additional information about Hill's upcoming stint in The Rookie. This makes it trickier to predict what lies ahead for him moving forward. That said, it doesn't seem like the character is joining the cast of the show full-time, so once his designated story is over, it's safe to say that he will be exiting the series. Granted that he survives whatever The Rookie season 9 has in store for him, then it's possible for him to come back. In light of that, just because Hill's character seems to have a pre-determined end for his Mid-Wilshire reign doesn't guarantee that Tim will be reclaiming that post.

What Hill's New Watch Commander Means For Tim Bradford's The Rookie Season 9 Story

Tim and Lucy in The Rookie ABC

There are various ways that the new watch commander will fit into The Rookie season 9's story, and not all of them are inherently bad for Tim. For starters, Hill's character may be coming in at the start of the cycle to take over the duties while his predecessor and Lucy have still yet to be rescued. Secondly, there's also a possibility that Tim willingly steps back from the post to focus on healing and eventual wedding planning activities, assuming that his and Lucy's engagement is still on after their abduction ordeal. Thirdly, he might have just decided that he wanted to be back on the streets, hence why he has to be replaced.

On the flip side, some darker narrative options include Tim being forced to vacate his post as he struggles to get back to work following his kidnapping. As seen in the official The Rookie season 9 trailer, it does seem like the goons are putting him through the ringer with physical torture, couple that with knowing that Lucy is also in danger can be detrimental to his overall state to resume duties as Mid-Wilshire's watch commander. Admittedly, going down this route would be extra frustrating, as it means that The Rookie won't even be able to properly celebrate the couple's engagement without this traumatic experience hanging over them.

Whatever the case may be, ABC is setting up another exciting year for the procedural. It's worth noting that before the fresh details were revealed at NYCC, The Rookie's 150th episode was unveiled through behind-the-scenes images, confirming one more thing to look forward to when it comes back in mid-season.
