Savita Punia names Priyanka Chopra Jonas for her biopic

Savita Punia recently spoke to PTI about the possibility of a biographical film based on her life. Although she had never imagined seeing her story adapted for the screen, the goalkeeper has a clear choice for the lead role.“I never thought of a movie being made on me. But if one is made, Priyanka Chopra is my favourite, and I think she would be able to do justice to the role.

When I see their journey, it inspires me a lot,” Savita told PTI.The hockey star’s choice comes as Priyanka Chopra Jonas has already portrayed a celebrated sportsperson on screen. The actor played Indian boxer Mary Kom in the 2014 biographical drama 'Mary Kom'.

A career spanning more than two decades

Savita Punia has represented India in 326 international matches, making her the country’s most-capped woman hockey player. Over a career spanning more than 20 years, she has witnessed the development of women’s hockey and contributed to several important achievements.

Her career highlights include India’s Asian Games gold medal and the team’s qualification for the 2028 Olympics. Her consistency as a goalkeeper has earned her the nickname ‘Wall of Indian hockey’. Savita has also received the Padma Shri in recognition of her contribution to Indian sport.

Childhood responsibilities shaped her journey

Savita’s path in hockey developed alongside responsibilities at home. When her mother was unwell, she began taking care of household chores while she was still in Class 5.

She continued to balance these duties with her sporting ambitions as she pursued a career in hockey.Away from the hockey field, Savita enjoys reading and listening to music. She has also revealed that watching films is not among her regular activities. "I like reading books and listening to music. I start my day with the Hanuman Chalisa. I don't watch many movies; I've probably seen eight or nine films so far, the last of which was Deepika Padukone's 'Chhapaak',” she told the portal.
