Buffy's OG star Seth Green reveals whether he was ever in the running to return for cancelled reboot

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Seth Green has shared whether he was ever going to return for the now-cancelled reboot. The project, titled New Sunnydale, was in the works from Hulu with Sarah Michelle Gellar set to reprise her titular role.

While no other OG stars had been confirmed for the new series, fans remained hopeful for at least a few cameos. But if any surprises were on the cards, an appearance from werewolf guitarist Oz wasn't one of them.

Speaking on The McBride Rewind podcast earlier this month, Oz actor Green revealed that he was not involved in any discussions about reprising his role.

"I was not part of those talks," he told host Josh McBride.

Oz first appeared in season 2 of Buffy as lead guitarist for the band Dingoes Ate My Baby. He later discovered he was a werewolf and went on to become Willow's boyfriend before leaving the show in season 4.

Though Green wasn't planning on making a comeback for the reboot, the star did express a desire to see what his character was up to in present day.

"If they wrote an Oz story, I'd love to see where Oz is right now," he said.

New Sunnydale was announced back in 2025, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong joining the cast as new slayer Nova. A pilot was filmed starring Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, Sarah Bock as Gracie, Daniel di Tomasso as Abe and Jack Cutmore-Scott as Mr Burke.

The cancellation was announced by Gellar earlier this year, in an emotional Instagram video.

"I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with 'Buffy: New Sunnydale," she revealed.

"I want to thank Chloé Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me."
