NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over breakfast on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also present at the meeting. Pictures shared by the Congress showed Rahul Gandhi and Anwar Ibrahim engaged in conversation over breakfast, with the two also seen shaking hands and exchanging smiles.Ibrahim later described Rahul Gandhi as his "good friend" in a post on X, saying the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on developments around the world and in the region."Had the opportunity once again to meet my good friend, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Indian Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, this morning over breakfast. This brief meeting provided space for us to exchange views on the latest international and regional developments," the Malaysian prime minister said.

The meeting came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Ibrahim on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas including trade, semiconductors, infrastructure and defence.

Malaysia is a partner country in the BRICS grouping and is also an important partner for India within the ASEAN framework. The breakfast meeting took place as the BRICS Summit entered its final day, with leaders gathering at Bharat Mandapam for an open session on ‘Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth’.

The summit has focused heavily on global geopolitical and economic challenges. The New Delhi Declaration 2026, adopted on Saturday, expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions in West Asia and called for maximum restraint.Addressing the summit on Sunday, PM Modi said rising geopolitical tensions were adversely affecting ordinary people across the world and called for greater BRICS cooperation to tackle challenges facing the Global South. He also raised concerns over the "weaponisation of technology and critical minerals", saying such developments could hinder shared progress and prosperity.
