Key Updates
  • August 16, 2026 18:14

Navneet Kaur speaks after the match.

    “It’s better than losing.”

“We tried our best and played really good. It’s a lesson for us that we need to keep the lead when we score first.”

“I think we put more pressure on them on the first quarter. Then they did it to us, but we recovered in the fourth quarter.”

    MATCH REPORT

India, China share points in their Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 opener

India and China shared spoils with a 2-2 draw in their FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 Group-D opener at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands.

  • August 16, 2026 18:10

    FULL-TIME; India 2-2 China

That’s all! India takes a point from this match against China as the contest ends with a 2-2 draw. The first half was all India, but it found itself absorbing all the pressure in the second. China fought back incredibly in the third quarter and kept the pressure on in the fourth, but the Indian defence, and its goalkeepers, made sure the team had something to take away from the match.

  • August 16, 2026 18:06

15'- IND 2-2 CHN; Protests for a PC

India asks for a PC but no referral there for them to avail. Last few seconds now!

  • August 16, 2026 18:03

12'- IND 2-2 CHN; PC for China!

Sakshi Rana fouls a Chinese player and concedes a PC. But the resulting short corner doesn’t bear fruit for the China team. But it gets another PC, and that yields a very close shot which fizzes past the far post.

  • August 16, 2026 17:58

7'- IND 2-2 CHN; Another chance!

It’s the same duo again. Navneet entering the D from the right flank. The ball pinballs and falls for Lalremsiami at the edge of the D. She goes the shot but a Chinese player comes right behind her to make a block. Meanwhile, Zou Meirong shown a green card, which means China will be down to 10 players for two minutes.

  • August 16, 2026 17:57

    6'- IND 2-2 CHN; CLOSE!

Was that the moment?? Navneet runs down the right flank and slaps a cross across the goal. It beats every Chinese presence and it’s Lalremsiami who just can’t get a touch at the far post.

  • August 16, 2026 17:55

4'- IND 2-2 CHN; Backs against the wall

India continues to fend off consecutive attacks on its D. Li Hong is in the centre of all that Chinese offensive moves, Sushila Chanu stands her ground and intercepts on one of the occasions.

  • August 16, 2026 17:51

    4th quarter begins

And China picks up from where it left off. I don’t think India has entered the Chinese D in the last 16 minutes or so in the match.

  • August 16, 2026 17:50

End of third quarter: India 2-2 China

All to play for in the fourth and final quarter, but China has the momentum. This quarter has been all about the Chinese with the goal and the possession domination.

  • August 16, 2026 17:46

12'- IND 2-2 CHN; India trying to go forward

China’s defence has become more organised and the Indians are finding it difficult to carry the ball through the midfield. Marijne and Co. will hope not to concede another one before the end of this quarter.

  • August 16, 2026 17:43

    10'- IND 2-2 CHN; SAVE!

Crucial save from Savita there as a direct shot from the drag-flick comes hurtling towards her.

  • August 16, 2026 17:43

10'- IND 2-2 CHN; Another PC

China gets another Penalty Corner. India protests but it doesn’t have a referral.

  • August 16, 2026 17:41

    9'- IND 2-2 CHN; GOALLL!

A thumping drag-flick from Ma Ning as the Chinese No. 9 sends the ball zipping through the air into the left corner. Savita completely left rooted to the ground. China restores parity!

  • August 16, 2026 17:40

9'- IND 2-1 CHN; Save and a PC

Savita makes a good save as a shot comes into her, but Ma Ning wins a PC for China.

  • August 16, 2026 17:38

7'- IND 2-1 CHN; India defending

India has been playing inside its own half for the past few minutes. It is, in one moment defending the goal, and in another, trying to get itself out of tight corners created by the Chinese press.

  • August 16, 2026 17:34

2'- IND 2-1 CHN; China comes on strong

The Chinese are taking the match to India, showing confidence and almost getting the second goal! It looked like it was either Sushila Chanu or Baljeet who gets the stick into the way and prevents a Chinese player from tapping it into an empty goal. Savita is back under the bar for India.

  • August 16, 2026 17:31

    Third quarter begins

India gets the ball rolling in the second half, shielding a verry narrow and meagre lead.

  • August 16, 2026 17:31

What are the coaches saying at HT?

China head coach: “Play with confidence and have speed in play, because that was lacking. We can do better because we have played them before. There are aspects of game I haven’t seen yet.”

India head coach: “We are disciplined, and creating chances. We have to go that next step to convert into goals.”

  • August 16, 2026 17:22

End of 2nd quarter: India 2-1 China

That’s half-time, and India has restored lead through Deepika’s fortunate finish from the PC. The Indian players have shown good organisation, especially during the overturns, quickly closing in on the Chinese players and stealing the ball back.

  • August 16, 2026 17:20

    14'- IND 2-1 CHN; Chance!

Indians roaring ahead, one attack after another on the Chinese D. On this occasion, Navneet gets another chance to turn and shoot, but she catches nothing but air. But India retains possession.

  • August 16, 2026 17:16

    10'- IND 2-1 CHN; GOALLLL!

It’s a goal for India as it stands after a lengthy video review on whether the ball had gone outside the D during the trapping stage. It was Deepika’s drag-flick which caught two deflections off of two Chinese players, first-rusher Li Hong and Luo Yaxi, to go inside the goal.

  • August 16, 2026 17:13

10'- IND 1-1 CHN; Another PC for India

Nikki Pradhan gets the ball in the middle of the park and releases Deepika. The forward then runs down the right flank, enters the D, and wins India a PC.

  • August 16, 2026 17:09

7'- IND 1-1 CHN; Indian player down

Navneet’s first shot was blocked but she got another chance. The second shot then went straight at Lalremsiami and the player goes down in pain. Meanwhile, Baljeet has been green carded for danger. She’ll have to sit out for two minutes now.

  • August 16, 2026 17:08

7'- IND 1-1 CHN; PC for India!

A bit crowded inside China’s D, but Navneet does well to win a PC for her side. Will she take it this time?

  • August 16, 2026 17:06

5'- IND 1-1 CHN; India holding on

Quite a few retrievals from the Indian players but they are mostly have their backs against the wall in the opening exchanges of this quarter. There have been moments where the ball has been carried over into the Chinese half, but nothing has come off it.

  • August 16, 2026 17:04

    2'- IND 1-1 CHN; Shot!

Peng Yang takes a shot but substitute goalkeeper Bichu Devi makes a regulation save.

  • August 16, 2026 17:03

    Second quarter begins

Shilpi defends well there, perhaps a little bit of redemption.

  • August 16, 2026 17:01

End of 1st quarter: India 1-1 China

India had held on for most of the quarter but for that unnecessary push from Shilpi inside the D. Marijne’s team will have tor regroup and hope it can take the lead again. But the Chinese will now have the momentum, having scored the goal.

  • August 16, 2026 16:59

    15'- IND 1-1 CHN; GOALLLLL!

China equalises with less than 10 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter. Zhang Ying sends the ball to Savita’s left and sounds the board to restore parity.

  • August 16, 2026 16:58

    15'- IND 1-0 CHN; A video review taken; It's a Penalty Stroke!

The on-field umpire has judged that there’s a push inside the Indian circle and it’s a Penalty Stroke for China. But Salima Tete says the push was on the Indian side. The video replay shows Shilpi Dabas pushing Zhong Jiaqi.

  • August 16, 2026 16:56

    14'- IND 1-0 CHN; CHANCE!

Li Hong slaps a cross across the face of the goal from the right flank and it goes through a sea of legs. Perhaps a deflection takes it away from a Chinese player stationed at the far post. If it wasn’t for that, it was an easy tap in.

  • August 16, 2026 16:55

13'- IND 1-0 CHN; India pushing for second

Deepika is back on the pitch and India is looking for that second goal which will provide some sort of security before the second quarter.

  • August 16, 2026 16:53

10'- IND 1-0 CHN; China with possession

After the goal, it’s all been China hogging up the ball with the Indian side almost defending with two lines of four. An interesting way that the Indians are pressing is crowding a particular Chinese player with 5-6 shirts and stealing the ball away.

  • August 16, 2026 16:50

    8'- IND 1-0 CHN; GOALLL!

India takes the lead and it’s Navneet who gets on the scoresheet! Quite cheeky too, a pass comes to her and she has a player marking her. But she deftly swivels and directs the ball towards goal with a flick. It beats everyone, rather everyone is left ball-watching and it clatters into the upright and enters the goal.

  • August 16, 2026 16:47

    5'- IND 0-0 CHN; Save

Deepika wasn’t on the pitch so it was Navneet who went for the slap. But a save is pulled off by the Chinese goalkeeper with her left leg and the teams go again. India, meanwhile, playing a very high press.

  • August 16, 2026 16:45

5'- IND 0-0 CHN; First PC for India

Lalremsiami is fouled there just outside the D and the umpire points to a Penalty Corner.

  • August 16, 2026 16:43

2'- IND 0-0 CHN; Early promise

Some of the Indian forwards trying to test the Chinese goalkeeper. A shot comes in from the left side, and it’s duly dealt with. Then seconds later, Navneet Kaur tries to chip it over the ‘keeper, but nothing comes from it.

  • August 16, 2026 16:41

    1st quarter begins!

China, clad in its traditional red colours, gets the ball rolling, attacking from right to left. India is wearing its away white kit.

  • August 16, 2026 16:40

    India formation

The broadcast shows a 3-4-3 formation for the Indian team. The likes of Deepika and Navneet Kaur lead the forward line.

  • August 16, 2026 16:36

China coach Alysson Annan: “We hope to be defensively strong, create opportunities. Not focussing on the title, not today, this is the most important match.”

Sjoerd Marijne: “Big challenge against China, we are looking forward to this, excited. We are the best of the rest, proven with the Nations Cup. Ending top 8 will be good.”

Visuals from the broadcast show groups of China fans around the Wagener Stadium, and as Aashin said from the ground, not many Indian supporters in the stands.

  • August 16, 2026 16:29

It's been some time since India beat China

The last time India beat China was on November 20 in 2024 in the final of the Asian Champions Trophy. The scoreline read 1-0.

The four most recent results, however, have gone China’s way.
