No Rey of hope as rampant SRG storm into MPL grand final

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Red Giants (SRG) silenced their doubters by reaching a sixth consecutive Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Malaysia (MPL MY) Grand Final on Friday.

The five-time defending champions swept Team Rey 3-0 in the upper bracket final at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara, also earning a place at January's M8 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkiye.

SRG had faced questions over their dominance after suffering three regular-season defeats to RRQ Tora, Team Vamos and Team Rey, despite finishing top of the standings.

Jungler Haqqullah "Sekys" Ahmad Shahrul Zaman said their return to the Grand Final showed they remained a force as they chased a sixth successive league crown.

"This season is kind of special, because during the regular season we lost three times," he said after the victory.

"Many expected that it was the beginning of our downfall. But we proved them wrong and still made it to the Grand Final."

Team Rey, who finished second in the regular season, were expected to provide a stern test after sweeping Team Vamos 3-0 in the upper bracket semi-finals.

However, SRG delivered an emphatic response to book their place in Sunday's title decider.

"We are not scared of Team Rey, but we had a lot of respect for them," Sekys added.

"They showed good gameplay during the regular season and swept Team Vamos 3-0 in their upper bracket semis."

Team Rey have another chance to reach the Grand Final when they face Team Vamos in the lower bracket final later today.

The winners will meet SRG on Sunday and secure Malaysia's second berth at M8.
