LEGO Skulls and Skeletons: Día de los Muertos

    LEGO

There are a trio of brick-built skeletons that can serve as fun, eye-catching decor during Halloween. First is the Halloween Skull Candle, a 204-piece set standing just over 7.5-inches tall. It’s topped with a dark candle wrapped in spiderwebs and spiders, while a spilled bottle of poison hints at how the skull “came back to life.” The fun detail is the eyes: you get two pairs, one green and one glow-in-the-dark, plus a gold tooth.

Then there are a pair of Día de los Muertos, one of which may be the most beautiful set in this whole collection. La Catrina, a 1,212-piece Ideas set, is a striking 17-inch Day of the Dead centerpiece. With a possible head and arms, she’s decorated with brick-built marigolds, a movable monarch butterfly, and printed sugar-skull details. For a small kit, try the Altar of the Dead, a 231-piece set that has a flower-covered skull on one side and a traditional alter (flower arch, food offerings, drawings) on the back. It stands only about 3.5 inches tall, which makes it an easy add-on for a shelf or desk.

    LEGO Haunted Houses

    LEGO

LEGO has two very different, very awesome haunted house models. The newest is Mayor Manor, the first entry in the new Midnight Valley Icons collection (modular buildings and locations like the Winter Village series). The 1,420-piece set is a crooked, weathered haunted house with an old tree growing into the brickwork. Inside are two stories of gothic decor, including a suit of armor, a fireplace and a grandfather clock stopped at midnight. Three glow-in-the-dark minifigures, a house cat, and a rat call this detailed set home.

The 736-piece Haunted Mansion is a Creator 3-in-1 set, meaning there are actually three different configurations: a two-story haunted house, a haunted ship, or a haunted train. There are a number of spooky surprises in the design (including a detachable scary tree and a hidden ghost!), and it includes five classic monster minifigs: a werewolf, a vampire, a ghost, Frankenstein’s monster, and a skeleton.

    Scary Shows, Made of LEGO

    LEGO

Fans of televised fright will get a kick building either the Stranger Things Creel House or the amazing The X-Files sets. Coming from the Icons line, the Creel House is a massive, 2,593-piece, 20-inch-wide build that includes Steve’s car, the WSQK radio van, and Will’s bicycle. The home, which features seven furnished spaces, can be pulled apart at the corners to reveal Vecna’s Mind Lair in the Upside Down — easily one of the neatest architecture tricks LEGO has pulled off. Plus, you get a whopping 13 minifigs: Vecna, Eleven, Will, Dustin, Mike, Lucas, Max, Steve,Robin, Jonathan, Nancy, Holly, and Mr. Whatsit.

The X-Files build, meanwhile, is a 1,478-piece Ideas build that centers on a UFO hovering over a forest scene. Beneath the ground, Mulder’s office is tucked away and loaded with Easter Eggs. This truly impressive fan-designed set — winner of the LEGO Ideas ’90s Nostalgia Challenge — includes eight minifigs: Mulder, Scully, Walter Skinner, Mr. X, Alex Krycek, Carl Busch, a gray alien, and the Flukeman.

For the Kids Who Like a Good Scare

    LEGO

There are more than a few killer Wednesday sets, but we like the Nevermore Academy best. Recreating the school in 890 pieces, the set features an open back showing a dorm room, a principal’s office, and a music room. The display kit also includes the first-ever Wednesday Addams minifigure, as well as Wednesday and Enid microfigures.

What’s neat about the Harry Potter Cauldron set is the Secret Potions Classroom element. You can display the 7.5-inch bubbling, brick-built cauldron as part of your Halloween decorations, put move the stirring stick and you’ll reveal the classroom. Inside are removable tables; a blackboard; potion bottles; and brick ingredients for Wolfsbane, Polyjuice and Love Potions. There’s also a Professor Snape and Hermione Granger minifigs, each with their own wand, plus as part of the LEGO Harry Potter 25th anniversary collection, you get one of 14 collectible Hogwarts portraits and Hermoine’s Otter Patronus figure.

LEGO Mugs for Your Halloween Brew

Okay, so these Zombie and Skeleton Ceramic Mugs aren’t builds, but they’re a fun pieces of seasonal LEGO merch. Shaped like an oversized LEGO skeleton or zombie minifigure head, these cups are perfect for cocoa, hot toddy, or whatever concoction you’re cooking up for your Halloween bash.
