Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 Is Officially Changing Genres For Its Final 6 Episodes

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will change genre one last time in its fifth and final season. Nearing the end of season 4, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has arguably taken more 'big swings' than ever before. In just a few examples, the crew of the USS Enterprise has gone on shore leave inspired by The Hangover, been turned into puppets, and had the days of their lives warped into a soap opera.

For Star Trek fans, Strange New Worlds season 4 has been a roller coaster. While some viewers have enjoyed the prequel's madcap genre experimentation, others yearn for more 'traditional Star Trek' from Strange New Worlds. Indeed, episodes like Strange New Worlds' time-traveling season premiere, the dramatic, character-driven starship crisis of episode 6, "Off-Hour," and the intense morality play of episode 8, "Orders of Magnitude," have been hailed by the fanbase, proving the show can still deliver great Star Trek.

After season 2's back-to-back wins with the comedy crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek's first-ever musical episode, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds became emboldened to push the envelope of what a Star Trek episode could be, as well as maximizing the endless talent of its cast.

Rather than the problems of new aliens and planets, genre became the true 'strange new worlds' the show has been exploring, so that every episode is wildly different from the last in tone and content. However, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' fifth and final season looks like the end of the show's controversial 'big swings.'

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 Will Be Very Different From Season 4

Based on comments by executive producer and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman and Paul Wesley, who plays James T. Kirk, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' 6-episode fifth and final season will be very different, perhaps refreshingly so after puppets and soap operas. Paul Wesley: “It's a much more serious season. It's very, very serious. It's very contained. We only have six episodes, so it's not like you're going to be doing these sort of fantastical, imaginative [stories]. It's very much like: This is the conclusion. This is the final chapter.

Akiva Goldsman told ScreenRant more about Strange New Worlds season 5's structure and tone: "I would say they're a suite. They're a set of episodes. I think they are tonally more singular than is typical for us... Really, five is a goodbye. It is a six-episode goodbye. And it's not solemn, but it is all the colors of goodbye."

Strange New Worlds season 5 sounds like it will be one uniform story about saying goodbye to Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his USS Enterprise crew, sending characters like Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) on their destinies, and transitioning to the start of Star Trek: The Original Series, with Captain Kirk in command of the Starship Enterprise's five-year mission.

Wesley also hints about a "huge" twist for Kirk where he "goes through something very important that allows us to understand why he is who he is." Paul calls what happens to Kirk in Strange New Worlds season 5 "a huge thing," and he promises that "people are going to be shocked.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has traditionally been episodic, but with serialized character arcs. Goldsman and Wesley indicate that Strange New Worlds season 5 will be more like one story told in 6 chapters. While there will surely be lighthearted and heartwarming character moments, it sounds like there won't be a reliance on gimmicks, and the final season's overall theme is saying goodbye.

Strange New Worlds Season 5 Ends A Star Trek Era & Begins Another

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' series finale will mark the end of an era and the start of another, both within the Star Trek universe and in the real world. As Akiva Goldsman told THR, Strange New Worlds will end by syncing with the beginning of Star Trek: The Original Series, which the executive producer says "was always the promise" to fans.

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ends, it will be with the magical moment of Captain James T. Kirk and his entire USS Enterprise crew assembled. This includes Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu aboard. Both will debut in Strange New Worlds' final episode, depicting Kirk's first day as Captain of the Enterprise.

In the real world, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds bowing out will mark the end of the 10-year saga of Star Trek on Paramount+ led by executive producer Alex Kurtzman. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the only other Paramount+ Star Trek show still on the air, and its second and final season will conclude in 2027 before Strange New Worlds season 5.

Like Star Trek: Enterprise when it ended executive producer Rick Berman's 18-year era of Star Trek in 2005, Strange New Worlds will end with big questions about the future of Star Trek. There are currently no new Star Trek TV shows in production, and only hints of a possible new movie in development that will be unconnected to the past 60 years of movie and TV canon.

Paramount Skydance wants to take Star Trek in a new direction, but there have been no details about what that plan might be. If the franchise's future involves doing something new and different, and not relying on Star Trek's storied past, then Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' final season and series finale will truly be the end of an era in more ways than one.
