Energy transition opens new investment opportunities: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani said that the energy transition opens new investment opportunities in downstreaming and Indonesia's digital infrastructure as demand grows for electricity in the digital economy and clean energy for industry.
"One of the most important opportunities before us is the intersection of the energy transition and the digital economy," Roeslani said at the opening of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2026 here on Tuesday.
According to him, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing electricity demand, while data centers are increasingly becoming part of strategic infrastructure.
"The future of AI will depend on electricity, transmission networks, industrial land, connectivity, and investment. In other words, the future of AI is also about infrastructure," he said.
Electricity demand in the digital sector continues to rise. In September 2026, state-owned electricity company PLN recorded serving 159 data center customers with a total connected capacity of 2,038 megavolt-amperes and energy consumption of 2,378 gigawatt hours.
Roeslani assessed that Indonesia has the economic scale, market size, and geographic position that can serve as assets to grow into one of Asia's main destinations for digital infrastructure investment.
On the industry side, he said Indonesia is building an integrated ecosystem that connects mining, processing, manufacturing, clean energy, and technology to increase domestic added value.
Data from the ministry shows downstreaming investment realization in the first half of 2026 reached Rp300.1 trillion, or 29.7 percent of total national investment realization. The value grew 6.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
Overall, Indonesia's investment realization in the first half of 2026 reached Rp1,010.6 trillion, up 7.2 percent year-on-year, and absorbed nearly 1.45 million workers. This achievement is equivalent to 49.5 percent of the 2026 investment target of Rp2,041.3 trillion.
In clean energy development, Roeslani cited the solar power plant program with a capacity of 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) as one of the government's priority programs.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry noted that the government began the program in August 2026. The initial phase covers 14 solar power plant projects in six provinces with a total capacity of around 5.3 GWp.
The government is also seeking to gradually replace diesel-based power plants with a capacity of around 13 gigawatts with solar power plants as part of accelerating the energy transition.
