A new EV launches every fortnight: Here are six of the best models to buy for different drivers

Over the past three years, carmakers have launched the equivalent of one EV every fortnight as British drivers are offered more choice than ever.

The rate at which new EVs are hitting the market is so fast that EV choice has doubled in just three years, new analysis from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders shows.

There are now 171 fully electric models available to UK car buyers, ranging from cheap, tiny city EVs to luxury GTs, with 85 new EVs reaching the market since 2023.

The latest EVs can travel an average of 300 miles on a single charge – more than twice the typical British driver's weekly mileage – while the longest-range EV in Britain can deliver over 500 miles of range.

These sit alongside 109 plug-in hybrid models and 52 hybrid electric models, meaning more than 75 per cent of models available on the UK market can drive without tailpipe emissions.

Vauxhall Corsa Electric: The first car EV

The EV shares a very similar exterior design to the petrol Corsa, while the interior is almost identical, meaning Corsa enthusiasts should feel right at home behind the wheel. 

It has up to 265 miles of range, reaches top speeds of 112mph, and can charge up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes.

The boot is practical at 326 litres, and the cabin features two 10-inch screens with Google built in.

BMW iX3: The long-distance SUV

The new BMW iX3 comes with a range of 500 miles, which can get you from Salcombe in Devon to Edinburgh on a single charge.

The electric equivalent of the X3, this mid-size SUV has been completely overhauled this year. 

A redesigned exterior, a new interior featuring BMW's Panoramic iDrive display, and updated driving dynamics make the iX3 a long-distance EV luxury buyers will like.

Audi A6 e-tron: The family estate car

Those wanting to go electric while sticking with their estate car of choice will be pleased to know that the A6 e-tron is an option. 

The e-tron version of the A6 Avant delivers punchy performance for an estate car, with 456bhp (using launch control), a 0–62mph time of 4.5 seconds, and a range of up to 444 miles – plenty for a family road trip.

For the hefty asking price, buyers get more than 500 miles of range, up to 199 miles of additional driving range from ten minutes of rapid charging, and steer-by-wire technology.

The Porsche Taycan gives sports car enthusiasts some of that German spirit in EV form

Porsche Taycan: The sporty EV

The Taycan four-door sports saloon delivers Porsche's trademark performance credentials to EV buyers, with 429bhp, a top speed of 143mph, and a 0–62mph time of 4.8 seconds. 

Features such as E-Shift simulated gears and Porsche Electric Sport Sound help recreate the feel of driving a combustion-engined Porsche. Range tops out at up to 434 miles on a single charge.
