After the Young Sheldon finale floated the idea that he might be gone, Leonard's fate after the events of The Big Bang Theory is officially confirmed. Johnny Galecki's character was one of the co-leads in Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady's hit comedy, which ran for 12 seasons on CBS. While Jim Parsons' Sheldon eventually became The Big Bang Theory's unofficial protagonist, it's fair to say that a big part of his story and its relatability was due to his relationship with Leonard.
So, when Young Sheldon ended without any kind of reference to Galecki's character, the infamous theory about Leonard being dead started making the rounds online. Despite being a prequel series which made bringing The Big Bang Theory cameos tricky, the CBS period comedy found ways to incorporate characters such as Amy and even Howard. The revelation that Sheldon was actually writing his autobiography, coupled with his decision to name his son Leonard helped give the hypothesis credibility.
Young Sheldon's Official Oral History Reveals Leonard's Fate
In Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, author Jessica Radloff brought up the matter to people involved with making the series, and they confirmed that Leonard is indeed alive. Granted that they did not offer any specifics about what he was up to during the Young Sheldon finale flashforward that could have easily featured Galecki, the team did offer new insight about the decision to not feature Sheldon's best friend. Read the full quote below:
In those future Sheldon and Amy scenes, it's established that Penny sometimes babysits for their kids, who are into acting and hockey. But die-hard fans noticed that Sheldon's best friend, Leonard, was not mentioned, leading some to think the character had died.
Eric Kaplan: That's the rumor on the internet. Personally, I think Leonard tried to do some kind of stunt on his motorbike and wiped out and was killed. I think that's cầnonical. So Leonard is dead, and we don't want to talk about that in the finale, because we don't want people to be sad, but he is, and Sheldon and Amy pulled the plug. Oh, and Penny moved on pretty quickly.
Steve Molaro: Laughs No! I had not even heard of this theory. It's certainly creative, but it's incorrect. I can assure everyone Leonard is alive and well. In fact, he says hello! Sheldon named his son after his two favorite Leonards (Hofstadter and Nimoy). It's not more complicated than that. Georgie and Mandy's baby, CeeCee, was also named "Constance" after Meemaw.
Also, the other reason Leonard wasn't part of the finale was that the writers didn't want to take away even more from the Young Sheldon cast.
Steve Holland: We were really trying to be conscious that this was the finale of Young Sheldon. We wanted to be careful that even the Jim and Mayim stuff didn't rob from our cast, who had earned their moment to say goodbye after seven years. There's a danger of the episode being so tilted toward Jim and Mayim that you're sort of short-shrifting your characters, and we were very conscious of not wanting to do that. We wanted to give Jim and Mayim something that was worth coming to do, but never let them upstage the cast. And I think if you started pulling other cast members from Big Bang, that's what was going to happen. That would have been disrespectful to our show and to our cast. And so many people that watched Young Sheldon didn't watch Big Bang.
Per the creative team, the decision to not bring back Galecki for a cameo in the Young Sheldon finale was in an effort to preserve the idea that the show was about Sheldon's childhood. Therefore, the focus needed to be on the Coopers from the past, especially as they grappled with the death of George and the boy genius move to California. Even though both Parsons and Mayim Bialik appeared as their respective The Big Bang Theory characters, it was strategically planned to ensure that it wouldn't take away from Young Sheldon's core story.
Why Young Sheldon Ignoring Leonard Was Still A Mistake
Now that Leonard's post-The Big Bang Theory fate is officially confirmed, the conversation about the character can move on to his legacy in the franchise. HBO Max's Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the first sequel spinoff in the Lorre and Prady-created comedy empire, revealed that after the events of the flagship, Sheldon and Leonard teamed up with Howard to create the Vari-State Quantum Interference Device that was apparently keeping the multiverse from collapsing. Between this and everything else that they went through in The Big Bang Theory, not acknowledging Galecki's character in Young Sheldon was one of the few major misses from the beloved comedy.
All things considered, there's an argument that Leonard was the single most impactful person in Sheldon's life. Everything in his adult arc, including finding a community and meeting Amy, was all possible after he met his best friend. Leonard was the socially-inept genius' support system long before he met Penny. With that, it's odd that not once did he mention his best friend throughout the process of making his autobiography, even though he even found a way to get Howard involved. While it's understandable that the Young Sheldon finale had to be focused on the Coopers, the prequel didn't have to wait until the show's final hour to recognize Leonard. Even then, Galecki didn't have to show up for a physical appearance. A simple reference to Leonard could have worked the same way that it did with Penny.
