Indonesia's life expectancy rises to 74.68 years in 2026: BPS

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's life expectancy rose to 74.68 years in 2026 from 74.47 years in 2025, supported by government health programs, including the Free Health Check initiative, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported.

"This is primarily driven by health initiatives, particularly the free health check program," BPS Deputy for National Accounts and Statistical Analysis Moh Edy Mahmud said at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.

Mahmud also cited the First 1,000 Days of Life Consortium and expanded healthcare facilities, which focus on early disease detection, stunting prevention and more equitable access to basic healthcare.

He said better access to quality healthcare helps reduce premature deaths, particularly among infants and children.

"The most critical factor in extending life expectancy is effectively addressing and reducing infant and child mortality," he said.

A child born in 2026 is statistically expected to live 74.68 years under the mortality conditions prevailing when the estimate was calculated.

BPS said the increase also reflects broader public health improvements, including more institutional births, greater awareness of safe drinking water and wider access to healthcare services.

Rising life expectancy also contributed to an improvement in Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) in 2026.

The country's HDI reached 76.59 this year, up 0.69 points from 75.90 in 2025, placing Indonesia in the high human development category, BPS reported.

Improvements in education and living standards also contributed to the HDI increase, alongside gains in healthcare.

Expected years of schooling rose to 13.34 years, while mean years of schooling reached 9.16 years.

Adjusted real per capita expenditure increased by Rp566,000 (about US$31.30) to Rp13.37 million (about US$740) in 2026.
