Ousted White House press secretary Katie Zacharia tenure was so short she earned herself a place in political history – as a new unit of time.

Her five days in the role, before being fired by Donald Trump, prompted comparisons to Anthony Scaramucci whose 11-day stint in 2017 became the benchmark for spectacularly short-lived appointments.

Now 41-year-old Ms Zacharia' fleeting career has inspired a new phrase among political observers: 'Half a Scaramucci.'

The extraordinary episode was discussed on Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday where CBS White House reporter Nancy Cordes commented: 'The previous record was held by Scaramucci [in President Trump's first term] and that was so startling that his name actually turned into a unit of time measurement.

'People would say, "Oh, you lasted a couple of Scaramuccis!"'

Asked whether a 'Zacharia' might now become a new unit of time in Washington, she replied: 'I suppose it is, she is half a Scaramucci.'

The California mother-of-four's downfall began with a first press briefing last Tuesday that was described as a 'car crash'.

Matters got worse when she was challenged over erroneous claims that she had passed the bar exam. And by Friday she had been sacked.

But Ms Zacharia appeared determined to leave on friendly terms. Posting a photograph online alongside Mr Trump in the Oval Office, she wrote: 'President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic and the most hardworking man.

'I wish more Americans appreciated him... It was an honour to work for him.'
